Hi

Can anyone tell me if there's much difference between the Nikon 70-300mm VR and the Tamron 70-300mm.

Apart from the obvious VR, would it be worth me getting a Nikon one to replace my Tamron.

Is there much difference in IQ? Is the Nikon better at AF than my Tamron, which has quite a slow AF?

Any advice would be appreciated

Thanks

I used to have the Tamron 70-300, and it was excellent on my D50. Never really had any problems with IQ. However, when I got my then first Nikon without the motor, D40X I then got the same one but with the motor built in. And it was crap! At least, the quality was fine, but the AF! A billion times slower than it was on the D50, and kept intermittently refusing to focus, and I had to take the lens off, then on, to get it workign, for a bit and then same thing again! Result, sent it back and got a Nikon 55-200 VR. Its awesome, great AF, Vr and quality. I'm now saving/looking for the 70-300 VR as I need the extra reach. So, I'd say, if you can, get the 70-300 VR, and if not, well, the 55-200 is excellent and similar price to the tamron. HTH.

I have a Nikon D80 bought the Tamron for it and had slow focus and problems. Took it back and changed for the Nikon and no problems at all. So would advise go for the Nikon.

No experience of the Tamron but I own the Nikon 70-300VR and its a fantastic lens. Extremely crisp IQ, quick to focus in all light conditions and the VR is very good indeed. Google some reviews on it and you'll find that there aren't any bad ones!

I have the tamron lens and it spends more time hunting and the shot has gone. saving up for the nikon version now.

Just to add to the chorus of approval for the Nikon 70-300VR - it's a brilliant lens, very sharp throughout the range (I've heard some say it drops off after 200mm but mine is fine) with quick and accurate focus and very effective VR. Love it! No experience of the Tamron but I would put my house on the Nikon being a worthwhile upgrade.

I'm going to sell the Tamron one and get the Nikon version, as i'm having the same problems as mentioned above
