Nikon upgrade!!

Hi! my father in law is looking to upgrade his Nikon d50 what would be the new model to this and may be the next step up model!
I use canon so haven't a clue!!

The d50 is about 4 generations old,so there isn't a direct replacement. The d90 or d7000 is probably the closest upgrade. It was the only budget model to be made with a built in focus motor, so you now need to go up a range to keep that function.
 
I went from the D50 (which was excellent) to the D7000 (which is fantastic). The D7000 is a much more involved camera, and if he's willing to explore it's greater capabilities then to me it's the logical next step, especially if he wants a camera that is a bit more complex to drive. Very pleased with the D7000.
By the way, I got £350 last year for my D50 with 30,000 actuations (including kit lenses), sold it through Amazon.
 
a D300 or D7000 can be picked up for a very reasonable price second hand, it all depends on his budget, is it £300 or £2000 ? and what about a lens upgrade ? what lenses does he already own ? what sort of things does he photograph ?

Ok his budget will prob b £300-400 he only has 1 lens that he uses and that's a tamron 18-250 which he loves and mainly takes pics of all his grand children which he has many of!!
 
Used D90 or a D200 seems to be the best option for the price you have quoted.
 
A D200 wouldn't be a good choice by the look of things here... it is a more professional level of camera but the sensor is generations old now, even older than the D90. I'd go with a D90 from somewhere like MPB.

i have a D200 and my dad owns a D90. just because the sensor is old that doesn't mean that the sensor is bad :bonk: as far as I'm aware the d200 is only semi-professional and after using my dads D90 there really isn't a massive difference, the D200 just has a lot more buttons on the actual body but the D90 can do everything the D200 can except one must go into the settings menu to do it.
 
Not sure what you are banging your own head for... Can you see anywhere above where I have said the D200 sensor is bad? I know about the 'more professional not professional' level of the D200, I had one, and have a D300 and a D700. I just said the D90 sensor is a generation newer and meant the camera is likely more appropriate to a user of a D50. The D200 sensor is more noisy than that of a D90 (generally) and produces cleaner results with a small increase in megapixels.
 
After considering your dads needs, I don't think a semi pro body is completely necessary and his lens would by far benefit from a newer sensor than bulkier body.

He has a D50, a D90 would be a massive upgrade in terms of body and sensor.

Yes they have the same used price but what would benefit your dad more, a better body or a better sensor?

Best of both worlds would obviously be to try get a D300...although personally I think a D90 would be more than suitable.
