Nikon v Canon camera line up

As Canon have bought out the 7D camera with 18 meg pixels, Nikon have a huge gap in their line up. You either have the choice of 12 meg or 24 meg pixel cameras only, with a tremendous price difference between them. I am thinking along the lines of Nikon matching Canon with an 18 meg pixel camera and calling it the D400 or D500 with possibly movie. They could go with a D700s but would still be only 12 meg pix.

Do you think Nikon will produce one?

Who knows?

It was Canon who originally had the gap in the line up which the 7D was developed to address, being targeted straight at the D300, not so much on pixel count, but on noise, build quality and features. There's little to choose between the two camera, although the 18 mp of the 7D does give a big advantage for long lens work and cropping.

I kind of hope Nikon do respond - when these two start slugging it out we all benefit in the end. ;)

There is the 50D which is 15.1 which has been about since Aug 08

The D300 is in a completely different price band to the 50D - it was that slot in the market that Canon weren't addressing, leaving Nikon a clear field - hence the 7D with better build quality, improved AF system, and other features to make it a direct competitor to the D300. In particular, the D300 is noted for it's AF ability, so the system in the 7D was a totally clean sheet project - as was the whoile camera.

... and after reading people's issues with the 7D in the noise and AF department, the D300 is still the camera to go for! ;)

Nope - there's no need...I've found my D3 better than adequate for the majority of work, with my D3x only being used for studio shoots...
If Nikon did bring out a 15-18Mpx camera I and many others probably wouldn't buy it unless there was a serious increase in iso-performance over the D3s...
