Hello there

Some thought about the Impressionists made me take another look at B&W in a literal fashion.
Searches revealed some suggestions which led nowhere, so as usual I had to resort to my autodidactic methods.

Like a lot of oddball techniques it works in differing ways with different images.

I've played with this in the past, I work i industrial machine vision, and so hav eplenty of thresholding tools available to me. These were done using a local adaptive threshold technique, which breaks the image into a grid, an dthen for each grid cell applies a threshold. Then with a small clean up (removal of odd pixels, done again with a machine vision tool), I ended up with:-

But as you say potentially varying degrees of success
 
That last image looks like Ceiswyn in Ratgoed, Meirionydd ...
