Hi
I have a Nikon D80 with a 18-70DX lens I am thinking of getting another lens and I cannot decide which one the two I have narrowed it down to are the Nikon 70-200 f2.8D or 70-300 VR I would be using the lens for wildlife photography. Any comments would be helpful and appreciated.

Can't help on the 70-200 2.8f, but the 70-300 vr is a cracking lens and approx 1/2 the price if not slightly less. Guess it all comes down to low light, but others will be better able to advise.

Think the 70-300VR is more like a 1/4 of the price of the 70-200vr ,depends whether you need the extra length or faster speed and AF .There both great len's i went for the 70-200 VR but that does'nt mean i don't want the 70-300 in the right situation.
mmm must resist buying the 70-300 VR:LOL:

Maybe I can help? I have the Nikon 70-300mm VR lens and not the Nikon but the Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 lens.

The Nikon 70-300mm is far better for reach obviously and I would say better for slower moving wildlife depending on weather conditions. not so good if really dull.

The Sigma, and I guess it would be the same with Nikon, is much better for closer shots with a quicker focus, also it is much much better in dull conditions.

If cost came into the factor I would suggest the Nikon 70-300VR lens as first choice if thats any help.

As an alternative to the Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 lens being so expensive The Sigma version doesn't have image stablisation but if taking fast moving wildlife stablisation doesn't come into the equation, as you wouldn't use it, and its far cheaper and has fast focusing. I am well happy with the Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 lens. It is heavier than the nikon 70-300VR lens by the way.

Do consider the Sigma before you buy anything.

I have narrowed it down to are the Nikon 70-200 f2.8D or 70-300 VR

If you mean the 80-200 f/2.8D then I'd say get that instead of the 70-300 VR if you can afford it as both the image and build quality are far superior and the faster glass will allow for much higher shutter speeds/lower iso and faster focussing.

If it's between the 70-300 and 80-200, the only thing I didn't like about the 80-200 on the D80 was it felt very heavy on the plastic/stainless steel camera, whereas it feels much better balanced on the sturdier D200/300 models.

The 70-200 VR however is a different matter altogether as it's 4 times the price of the 70-300 and twice the price of the 80-200, but worth every penny.

sorry for my mistake I did mean the 80-200 2.8D ED
