Not Your Usual Tripod Query - Looking For Spikes

I was lucky enough to spend the day on a workshop with Joe Cornish last week, and whilst with him was rather drawn to his tripod. It was a tatty looking thing, but had these bloody great 4" spikes on the bottom that allowed him to cut through the heather and get a really sturdy footing for his camera.

As you'd expect, his tripod was a Gitzo and so were the spikes. I've had a look at my carbon Velbon to see if I could remove the feet and fit the spikes (it currently has 1/2" spikes which are next to useless), but it doesn't look possible. Does anyone know if other brands of tripod (Manfrotto?) can have these spikes? Or perhaps would accept the Gitzo spikes?

The Manfrotto 236 is a hefty spike

They're kinda interesting. My only thought would be the associated 'bulk' around the clamp is going to make it much harder for them to 'cut through' any undergrowth/heather/etc.

the camlink tripod i brought had retractable spikes which are about 2 or 3 inches long

Sounds a bargain if it's stable.

These are all I could find for a gitzzo

Thanks, but I've found the Long Gitzo Spikes. Just can't attach them to my existing 'pod and wondering if they'll attach to something like a Manfrotto or Giottos rather than having to fork out megabucks for a Gitzo which is not an option at the minute.

Lower price for the Gitzo spikes here.

Then you just need someone to braze suitable nuts into short lengths of tube which you epoxy into your 'pod legs. You may prefer a non-ferrous solution.
