Last week I decide to buy a used 24-105 f4 IS and it arrived this morning. It looks to be in excellent condition (as I was promised) with completely clean optics. So I attached it to the camera to take some test shots and noticed an odd noise coming from the IS. The IS is very quiet (compared to a 100-400) and seems to work well however when panning with the lens at 105mm the IS makes an odd noise. It's a sort of grunting noise, almost like a distant cow! So can anyone confirm that this is just the way the lens is or should I be getting it checked out?

No moocows here I'm afraid! The IS 'rolling' sound does rise ever so slightly, dependent on the speed of the pan, but at 10 different variations of speed it never rose to a level that would cause concern at all.

I've just tried it on my one, which I bought new a couple of weeks ago. There's no noise while panning, just the wee pffftss you get when the IS cuts in and out which you don't hear if you are on AF. Sorry but yours must have some fault. Still, if the pics come out fine that's all that matters really, as long as the problem doesn't get worse.

How much did you pay second hand if you don't mind me asking?

Just tried mine out too which is one month old. It does get slightly louder at 105mm (perhaps the IS system spins faster?) however, it does not change its tone. Just the usual burring noise and to be honest isn't audible at all unless you are in a silent room.

I'd get it checked out...

it might also depend on whether you're on mode1 or mode 2?
but at least you know the lens is good. post up some pics with it soon, as (per the other thread) it's on my 'possible purchase' list :)
