Whats the best lens for portraits speaking from a full frame point of view?

NIK

If your talking full frame 35mm style then anything from 85mm - 105mm is best from what I have read.

Canon 85mm f1.8 or f1.2 work really well very sharp and nice bokeh
Nikon I have the 105mm f2.5 and 85mm f1.4 and would use any of them for portaits very sharp both lens.

Medium format then you looking around the 110mm -150mm mark I would think

Don't rule out the 135 f/2 on a full-frame - it's certainly next on my wishlist!

Anything that gives you the result you want at the working distance you are happy with. "Flattening" and other terms linked to angle of view and portraiture are optical illusions.

I've been thinking about this and if my subject had personal hygiene issues I'd use a 300mm, if they were hearing impaired and had good hygiene I'd use a 50mm. :)

Is the correct answer! (Not that many seem to take it on board every time it's posted.)

The 85mm f/1.4D AF-Nikkor is renowned as a sterling protrait lens... though I might wait for the rumoured new version to appear...
A lovely 'old' portrait lens was the Nikkor 105 f/2.5 m/f lens - now discontinued unfortunately...The nearest you can get to it now is the 105mm f/2D AF-DC Nikkor which has something called 'de-focus' image control which is supposed to allow you to do 'something'... not sure what exactly...
Also has rounded diaphragm blades for the really nice bokeh some photographers crave...

A 135mm f/2D AF-DC Nikkor is also available...
