Hey,

I'm looking to buy some cheap flash guns to play with but remember someone saying that they output (the older ones) a high voltage or something that can bugger the camera? ANyone know what i'm talking about?!?

Also if I have a 40D and buy a Nikon flash unit (SB 24 etc) am i correct in thinking I can use this on a wireless set up but not on the hot shoe?

I'm doing this so I can have a play with multiflash set ups...

Cross-manufacturer wireless flash will work if you can get the slave flash (the unit) to flash when it sees another flash fire (in this case, your onboard flash). For normal radio-controlled wireless flash systems, both master and slave must be of the same manufacturer and compatible.

If you want to know if an old cheap flash is safe, check this list - the flash voltage bible:

If it's not there, you can test it with a multimeter. I tested three flashes: one came out at 6V, the other two at 250 and 350V!
