Old Flash units with modern DSLRs

Can anyone tell me if any flash units from the old days are compatible with modern day DSLR cameras. The reason I ask, is that I rarely if ever use the on board flash, and would like to make use of any one of the half dozen old hotshoe flashes which I have. I do not just want to put one on the Sony, because of the possible problems which may arise.

could goggle it too,
 
The short answer is yes and no, some are some are not comptable, some of the older flashes have a high trigger voltage, most modern camera can't cope with it and may get fried.
 
As I use 3 old flashes on my Canon I have done a bit of research and certainly for Canon it appears to be a myth that modern DSLR's get fried,its more likeley 1st and second generation DSLR's that have the problem
 
Cheers for that, I will look into it a bit more, and if I get any definite information on the Sony Alpha range, I will post it on that thread.
