Hi

going on a cruise later in the year and I dont want to be wandering around with lots of lenses while out on exursions - I'm after a single lens ideally that will suit my needs.

my current arsenal is
18-55 kit
28-105 f3.5-f4.5
55-250 f4-f5.6
50mm f1.8

I like the width of my 18mm, but 55mm isnt long enough for me - I'm thinking of hiring one specifically for this purpose, and have been looking at the 24-105 (F4) or 24-70 (F2.8), but I'm not sure if i'll notice the gap from 18-24mm on my crop body lens.

80% of the photos will be outside hopefully under glorious meditteranean daylight, but i'd also want to do things at night indoors etc, so wider aperture may be a bonus.....

any thoughts or suggestions what may suit best?

On a full frame I would say the 24-105L IS would be perfect, on a crop body I would suspect that you need something around the 17-70 sort of region to cover a similar area.

If you can live without the wider end then the 24-105L may suit but when I was on my cruise last year many of the shots I took on my 24-105L were either views at 24 or 28mm or portraits between 80 & 105mm.

id look at taking the 18-55 kit lens and the 55-250, bit of fill flash if required wont hurt

Why not buy a Sigma 17-70mm? while not a constant 2.8, has got a good range because I personally also find the 55mm a little restrictive for portraits! Believe there's one FS in the classifieds section :) Also think you probably will notice the 18-24mm gap if you're taking for eg pictures of the sea and stuff!

18-200 perhaps?

Has to be right.
If it was Nikon I'd say 18-200VR, not sure if Canon have an equivalent? But Sigma do one, it's f/6.3 at the long end but if most of the time you're in sunlight it shouldn't present a problem.

I was on a cruise earlier this year and some 60% of the pics were on the 24-70, about 30% on the 10-20 and the last 10% on the 70-200. Not sure if this helps you at all, but gives you some idea of what you might need. FWIW, the 24-70 is Sigmas F2.8, and used on a Nikon cropped sensor.

go with the 24-105, but compare prices on hiring vs purchasing. It might be cheaper to purchase the lens. Also, make sure to take along a circular polarizing filter for all of those beautiful blue skies you'll see on the cruise!

I have a 24-105L on a 1.6 crop sensor camera and it's not as bad as people say. I barely ever change over to the 10-22. I done a lot of studio work yesterday and the 24-105L was perfect but admittedly that didn't need much 'wideness' -- Why not go for a 18-200 or something?
