Hi

I want to improve my protection of pics on laptop - I'm after an online backup service - does anyone use one or can they recommend one thats relatively cheap.

Requirements are as follows
- Agent based, i.e. so it can run on the laptop automatically as per a schedule to backup online
- secure (As secure as Web things can be!?)
- cheap!

Do you really need to have it done like this, or would an NAS work for you?

We have a Buffalo NAS that then backs up itself every day onto a USB drive and then emails me to say it has done it.

we have that at my partner's house, installed because the Sonos sound system uses it, but I've been very impressed with it.

I don't use a laptop so here I have two USB drives backing up off the PC.

The advantage we have is that all of the picture files are stored in both locations so we already have an off site storage, but I have been very impressed with the NAS and thought as a laptop user you might see that as an option.
 
Personally i wouldn't use a on line storage, mainly in case they go bust and vanish. it has happened recently iirc.

NAS and external drives are a much better solution. I work from home and have a couple of drives that are on rotation and stored out of the home.

I've toyed with this idea for months now and never moved one direction or the other; I currently have an external USB HDD that I plug in once a week to do backups; but was always conscious of my house burning down with the laptop and hard drive inside (as an extreme example)

so i thought of getting a second HDD or a NAS for home and then storing one HDD offsite somewhere - problem is that my parents live 45 minutes away and so it wouldnt be flexible enough, i'd also have to take my laptop up to theirs every time i went - so it doesnt really work - in reality i'd leave myself exposed for months through laziness/forgetfulness.....

so i've gone for an online solution; that way i know I'll always backup my most recent data, and i have my external HDD still in place in case of a less serios problem; i.e. laptop needs formatting or its own HDD dies I can do a local and quick recovery....

ive heard too many stories of people losing their data; and to me although its not huge, the historical archive of personal photos and photography type photos - i do worry about it

$54 for a year isnt too bad- should have done it pre xmas at $2 per £1, but my own fault for putting it off!

true! - but you can say that about anything - if canon goes bust ive lost the warranty on my new camera and lenses ive purchased in the past 6 months

backups of any type are only insurance, if Mozy goes bust then I've still got my primary data on the laptop, and my USB based backup - heck I may even do a DVD burn now and again and store that at the parents house!
 
I have 2 external drives that I feel much safer with than online backup plus I have already filled the 160 gig one so these online ones just don't appear to have the space I need

I have 20GB that it says it'll take me near enough 2 weeks to do the initial backup of! - glad I dont have 160GB

for £35-40 even if I just do one backup now and forget about it for the next 12 months (paid a year upfront) the protection of whats in the first backup run is worth the cost!

Big USB drives are so cheap now. I just got a 1Tb for under £80, and I've started using memeo so I don't do backups at all now, anything I save is automatically copied across.

This wouldn't happen with Crash Plan. Unless your family and friends suddenly decide they don't like you any more :lol:
 
For a back up that meets your requirements I also use Mozy, but I wouldn't use it as an only back up, I also use a Time Capsule to automatically back up locally (and all my images are copied to an external HD when I import to Lightroom) anything that isn't automatic is going to get forgotten despite all the best intentions.
