out with the 24-70 and in with the 35mm 1.4?

I've owned the 24-70 now for about 9 months, it takes some very lovely photographs, but I just never use it. I find myself reaching for my primes all the time over my zooms.

I use my sigma 85mm 1.4 99% of the time, in fact i went on holiday for a week and it was all i used.

I keep seeing such great shots with the 35mm 1.4 and I'm just wondering whether to sell my 24-70 and put the money towards the prime

anyone done similar and regretted or was glad?

for what its worth I did the same with the Nikon and have never looked back
 
I just got the 35mm 1.4 and already I'm thinking about ditching my 24-105 when I get another prime in-between my 35 and 100
 
I have a 35 f1.4 I use on my 7D and it's an amazing lens with super sharp images and bokeh!!! The fall off in to the bokeh is NICE!! I highly recommend it but wounder if the 24mm might even be better suited to the cropped body. It is truly great lens, but with all that said. How much would be looking to get from your 24-70? Cause I'd be interested as it also has amazing IQ. Not much help with your dilemma I know but if go for the change I may be able to help you get out of your 24-70....:)
 
I used to have the primes 85mm 35mm 50mm and got the 24-70mm and really love the not swapping lenses all the time - no it is not quite as sharp as the really good primes but it ios not far off them and negates the dust on the sensor all the time

in the end I got rid of the 85mm F1.8 as it was not getting used at all - I still have a trio of Longer Primes but I really like the 24-70mm for general shooting out and about stuff
 
I just wish this lens was not as good as it is. I took it out to test it again last night and convince myself it was poo but when you get shots like this at 100%:

its hard to let it go.

I just never use it, and in 9 months i think have about 50 shots from it. But I wonder would i use the 35mm anymore frequently?
 
I also have a 24-70 and have wondered whether buying a 35 1.4 is really worth it. What I'd really like to see is the 24-70 at 35mm and 35 1.4 focussed on the same thing at various apertures and distances.

Also for a subject a couple of metres from the camera, what is the difference between f1.4 and f2.8 at 35mm?

Would the difference between the two shots be really worth £1400?

on my D90, I've got a 35mm f1.8 and love that, but have been toying of the idea of getting the flexibility of a tamron 24-70 f2.8

I'd also like to see the difference, but you'd have to stop the 35mm down to 2.8 and then it woudln't really be the point would it. If I get the 35mm I'll be using it at 1.4 and 1.6

It just seems to have this special image quality much like our sigma 85mm does

i did a bokeh comparison at 1.4 and 2.8 with the sigma 50mm and there was a huge difference

Yeah there is a massive difference even several metres away. The contrast if the lens and colour reproduction is also much better than the zooms.
 
I have both, I use the 24-70 for general purpose shooting and the 1.4 for gigs where the light is truly appalling sometimes. The 24-70 is on the camera [5D2] most of the time and is a cracking lens. I wonder tho how many would notice the difference between the same shot different lenses, at least in terms of quality.
When I do use the 35mm I often miss the zoom but I have had some cracking shots with it in really poor light!

Duncan, do you have any shots wider open? Most of that set was f/4 or above. I've only used the 35L briefly, but the colour rendition and sharpness is fantastic. It's on my shopping list too Joe (you just missed one in the classifieds) - I'd say give it a go to at least get it out of your system, and the easy resale value would not put you far out of pocket.
 
I don't have my laptop with the majority of my stuff on it. I am very surprised you said it was at 4.0 +, mostly its 1.4/2!!

Something is going wrong with the EXIFs then.. or you linked to the wrong set ;)

I have an idea.

Send me your 24-70 (I will take care of it) then see how long it takes you to miss it. If it is over 2 months - sell it, if it is less - keep it.
 
yep, i just can't put my primes down

I took the 24-70 to a friends wedding this weekend just for one last try to see if it would convince me. I couldn't fault it, but it just didnt inspire me, i was hoping the pics would be rubbish but they just werent:

i am in the same dilema

hardly use my 24-70 instead opting for the 24-105 f4 which is lighter

i have had my eye on the 35mm for a while now, i might do the same and sell the 24-70
 
FF for me. I didn't think it gave as nice looking shots on the crop. Still nice but can be breathtaking on a full frame
 
Thought so. I want to get a FF but the 5D MK2 is too much and the 5D is quite old though I'm sure perfectly capable.
 
I'm using a 5d and it is very good and a real bargain for what you can get them for. So much so now I want a second ff I might just get another 5d.
 
I know, the prices are much more affordable but to find one in good condition with low mileage is hard. I'll keep looking. (Sorry to go off topic :))
