Using the search facility in MS Outlook is causing problems, it says it's indexing and there are thousands of things it's indexing:

It seems to be a never ending job!
I've enabled the search indexer backoff feature which is supposed to speed the process up but I'm puzzled at why the process is so behind - it is on most of the day and often not used ... why doesn't it ever seem to catch up with the indexing? :thinking:
 
Doesn't seem to, it's at 18823 at the moment, that's over 3,000 more than when I 1st posted!
 
PS. What data files are ticked in Outlook's Search Options/Indexing pane - (Tools/Instant Search/Search Options)?
 
Strangely .pst files were not ticked, I have just ticked them and it is now rebuilding the index - don't know why it was unticked, doesn't seem logical but fingers crossed that it will resolve the issue :thumbs:
 
Update on this:
After running scanpst, which discovered that the .pst file had errors and so corrected them, indexing completed but came to a halt at around September 2010, which from memory is about the time when I upgraded from XP to Win 7.
Nothing will make Outlook index beyond September 2010 even if I rebuild the index and let it work on re-indexing to completion which takes a full day or more.
So today I downloaded a free programme called Xobni which indexed the entire Outlook Personal File in about 10 mins and now seems to search and find everything up to date accurately and speedily.
 
Maybe you've got a virus in one of the emails. I've had similar errors importing messages from an outlook .pst backup file. Import stopped at a virus-laden email and refused to import anything before the date of the dodgy message. Perhaps indexing behaves the same way.
 
I don't think so (number of scans says not and good AV installed) it does seem to have happened to a lot of people who have upgraded to Win 7.
