tried to get some photos of some Exmoor ponies that have just arrived at Tiptree Heath yesterday, but all the pics where soft, i tried various settings but to no avail, has anyone got any advice for this kind of shooting?
i am using a 7d plus a 15-85 lens, and no flash, heres the best one i managed

I think it's a case of trial and error in the sense of composition and focus. Put it in your Av mode and put it down to the widest aperture you can, and then stop it down with the exposure comp.

Or alternatively, you could run them through Lightroom and sharpen them yourself. not need to go insane over it, but if my photographs are a little on the softer side, I can bring out detail using the sharpening tool in lightroom :)

this was the best, i think the shutter spped was too lo, need to raise it and get the light in

I agree, perhaps you were shooting in P mode and the camera the light wasn't good enough? Take a tripod or even a monopod with you next time, that will certainly help with the metering.

Overcast conditionsloose a lot lot more light than you might think. Usually it's acase if 400-800 on the ISO in order to keep handholdable speeds at decent aperures.

This was shot at ISO 3200 so not too surprising it's a little soft, shutter speed was 1/100 so should be OK unless you have really shakey hands.

I try to stay away from high ISO's for simple fear that if I don't plan the shot to be grainy, ill have ruined the photo opportunity. Mind you, 7D's have much better noise reduction than my little ol' 500D.
