please help, im getting confused :) again
my question is regarding what size to set a website page so you dont need to scroll to view the page. I have read 800 x600 is the screen size of the smallest/average screen so 760 x 410 is the safe viewable size, is this correct?

I'd say the most common is 1024x768

Have a read of THIS I was looking at yesterday.

I would base it on the smallest screen size of 1280x800 is apparently the most common screen resolution that my visitors use! 25% followed in order by 1440 x 900 (15%), 1280x1024 (13%), 1600x1050 (12%) and 1024 x 768 (10%)

800x600 is on 2% of traffic.

This isn't an overview of the web I guess but must be fairly common of users.

thanks woblee

i just tried 1024 x 576 (to take into account google bar etc) this seems good on the preview option, i guess time will tell once i manage to get this live

I'd go smaller than 1024 - scroll bars can still get in the way

I actually did a survey asking what size screens people normally use and what are the smallest sized screens they use last month. I will locate them....

1024x768 is industry standard in web development circles. 960 is the width I use to take into account scrollbars.

The smallest resolution screens are mobile devices too so up to you whether you design for that too?

Personally I don't like to go much wider than 800px. I don't like to surf with the browser maximised as it can harm the legibility of text, a good example is this site which is fluid in width; when the browser is maximised to 1680px, each line of text gets too wide and is harder to read.

Like KayJay says I'd use 960px as a maximum if you want to avoid horizontal scrolling and maintain the legibility of your text.
