Panasonic Blocks 3rd Party Batteries

mmm, I wonder if it blocks all aftermarket ones or the ones that don't have the chip, proction etc - wouldn't be surprised if the aftermarket compaines find a way round it though

Is it for protection  Is it not

It's only the same as car manufacturers trying to void warranties if you didn't use their oil/parts etc...that was overturned in the European courts so that "up to spec" NON oem PARTS COULD BE USED and the OEM had no right to void warranty.

You'll probably find if it goes against competition laws they'll be brought to book for it.

I have a TZ6 which is on the list I have a third party battery but then again I have not ugraded the firmware.

Why should a genuine battery cost between £30- £40 pounds and a third party one shipped from HK in less than 2 days cost less than £10?

 Im using a 3rd party battery with no probs on my D40

same on my D80

I'm not saying the manufacturers don't have ways around it, however each time a new Nikon camera that uses, say, the EN-EL3e comes out you'll find that the aftermarket stuff suddenly doesn't work.

For example, I bought a pile of batteries for my D80, then I upgraded to a D300 about 6 months later. Not one of those batteries works in the D300, the original Nikon one does, but the 3rd party ones all show a flashing battery sign with zero charge and the camera won't operate.

As far as the D40 goes, it and by association probably the D40x/60 etc, brings up a message stating that the battery is incompatible, when some aftermarket batteries are used.
