Hi I am a nebie to this forum and a newbie to photography....so need some help::help:
Have recently purchased a Panasonic LX3 which I am very pleased with.....however there is a problem....I am a keen Carp fisherman and when I occassionally catch a Carp I like to take it's picture with me holding it......if I'm fishing with somebody this is not a problem, but most of the time I am on my own......my previous camera had a self timer which I could set to 30 seconds and then in burst mode it would take up to 10 shots....this was good:)
The Lx3 only has 2 options for self timer, 2 seconds or 10 seconds, this does not leave enough time to get to the fish, struggle to hold the slippery beast upright and smile within the 10 seconds:thumbsdown:
So my question is......is there anyway of putting a software patch into the camera that will extend the 10 seconds to say 30 seconds?
Have been looking at Autoknips clockwork self timers (really old german device) but this would entail making something that it could attach to.....and it appears to only give 10 seconds (plus the 10 already in the camera) which still falls short of the 30 seconds I would like.
Anybody got any good ideas:help:

30 seconds is a long self-timer delay!

Sorry to say this but it seems you're out of luck. I'm not an LX3 guru so not up to speed on the custom firmware scene (if there is one) and, after a bit of Googling, it seems you can't have a remote shutter release as it's a mechanical shutter.

I'd suggest trying to get the fish to cooperate and get yourself a good pair of running shoes so you and the fish can be smiling within 10 seconds!

If you do manage to get something together, come back and post your solution!

George.

Sorry, 2 secs or 10 secs is the only choices and is pretty much standard across most P&S cameras.

If there any way you can film the scene and produce a still from the film?

Hmmm, have found a fitting that fits to the flash shoe, and provides a screww in point for a cable shutter release......this is manufactured by a guy in the states.......this would then allow various ways of firing a shot....by mechanical timer......or by some form of triggering device (plunger/Vacum bulb) by me whilst holding big slippery totally p*ssed off carp..........would prefer the timer option as this would leave both hands free to deal with the fish (and even with 2 hands they still do their best to beat you up).
Will post some pics later of the mechanical possibilities. for the time being here is a link to Autoknips mechanical timers.....it's kind of interesting anyway........if anybody else has any ideas please send them. Here is the Link http://www.submin.com/general/collection/accessories/autoknips.htm

Ahh have realised I don't have the knowledge to actually post a picture....it keeps asking for an URL....whatever that is....will try later when I have finished work

did actually think of that and it may well become my fallback position......but probably need some software to do it.

Here's another link which shows the fitting I was talking about.

Heath Robinson approach
Cannibalise one of these http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&sku=545650&Q=&is=REG&A=details
with a small 'bladdder' on the shutter end maybe velcro'd over the release and the bulb under your knee when holding the fish then you can take photo when ready.

Ahhh my old mate Heath!!....I actually was thinking about that.....but just imagine the scene....30Lb angry carp.....muddy bankside....pouring with rain....howling gale....me the carp the camera and the ancilaries all in the drink:bonk:.......but I do see exactly where you're coming from....I'd just need to get to the gymnastics club to practice:gag:
Keep em coming I love it:wave:
