Hi peeps :)

I'm seriously considering one of these to cart my stuff about, when either togging locally or getting the bus to nature reserves etc. as I'm prone to back problems..

Anyway, I know Fracster bought one from KIPAX, so would welcome feedback from users on how much it'll carry etc. etc.

I have a 1510 which is somewhat smaller I believe and use it to carry 500 f/4, teleconverters, body and a 24-105 with no problem. The only issues I have with it is that the wheels are fine for tarmac and concrete but not for nature reserves where they are too small. For that, I now strap a rucksac to a fishing trolley with inflatable tyres...
 
Hi, I agree with grumpybadger - the wheels are too small for use on anything other than smooth, solid surfaces. Also if the surface is rough the vibrations can be transmitted through the case to the contents if they are touching the case itself. (No problem if you use the foam or padded dividers.)

I bought a 1560 for the use you suggest and it could swallow plenty of gear - 20D and 40D bodies, wideangle and standard zoom, plus a longer zoom (ie 100-300 sigma) as well as flash, batteries, cards and all the other rubbish I tend to carry but never use.... However, I ended up getting a lowepro rucksack for walking around with, and the peli cases tend to stay in the car or get used for storage at home. For me, a heavy rucksack is easier to manage than a heavy peli case.
 
My Peli 1600 doesn't have wheels but makes an excellent camera lens storage facility. Bit on the heavy side to cart around unless its in the car should I need all my gear for a days shoot.

The uk distributor is about 10 mins from me and I believe they have a display room and will sell direct so might pay a visit with all my gear when 100-300 Sigma arrives to see what would be the ideal size .
Looking perhaps for safe and secure storage at home as opposed to carrying round.

Ok I have a 40D/50mm/17/70 and hopefully this week a Sigma 100/300 , would your 1600 take this easily and room for a Flash/TC and a few bits ?

The thing I forgot to say is that mine takes a ThinkTank Airport Ultralight rucksac, so I can leave it in the boot of the car and then go walking with kit when I get to the other end...

In my peli 1600 case I can get 1 camera +6 lenses + just enough room for memory cards.

So in answer to your question yes you could easily get your gear in with room to spare, I Don't put lens hoods in it I keep then seperate but that is my personal choice its the camera and lens I want to protect.

Thanks for the reply , I haven"t got as much gear as you so might get away with one a bit smaller then , but then another lens might come along !

Ok I shall remove the link for security purposes now you have seen it, I would suggest you get larger than you need at present because you are bound to add to your gear at a later date and there is nothing worse than not having enough room for safe storage.

I have the same as grumpybadger (1510) and I usually carry 2x 1D bodies, 300mm IS 2.8L, 70-200 IS 2.8L, 16-35 2.8L, a flash and memory cards. I also have a monopod strapped on the side.

It is quite heavy but sturdy and also doubles up as a seat ;).

The alternative is the Storm range of cases. Have seen a couple of them and they seem very good!

I think I'll carry the case at nature reserves where it's not possible to wheel it around and just hope my back holds up..

I think one with dividers will be the way to go, so will have to think this through.

The 1610 holds all my gear,the 600 F4 excluded, I won`t list my lenses as that may appear to be bragging and could start another thread in the OOF area.....:p......It will also take both of my long lenses and two bodies if I leave a couple of smaller,lesser used lenses out....(must sell some stuff).....The wheels are ok for airports, but useless for rough terrain, a cheap fishing trolley sorts that out well.They are well made and double as a durable seat for when you are tired of dragging it about.......:D

TBH, I mainly use mine for having all my gear stored together and safely at home, I tend to pick what I need out of it and leavie it at home, they can also be chained and locked to the wall/car.........:thumbs:

The IM2720 I'll be getting will have not have foam but dividers...

I did consider the Peli, but for me, the Storm has more padding around the handles and appears a lot easier to open, especially in the cold.

Would be very grateful if anyone could point me in the direction of the cheapest dealers..

Have Googled and Pricerunned etc. etc. but would welcome suggestions from those who have purchased a Storm case.

Got some prices from Peli Products today and they were dearer than whats available from elsewhere , guess dealers buy in bulk from them and can discount accordingly.
Most seem to offer free del , as do Peli Products.

If you're interested in Peli, this shop http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Diving-Shop seem to be the cheapest in the UK and they even consider "Best Offers" on some of their cases...
 
Thanks for that , will watch it , initial look shows 1600 case about £30 cheaper than the main uk supplier.
 
Hi Mark, have you actually tried carrying a case with a load of kit in it for any distance? My back is in "reasonable" condition, but I found that a case was/is much worse than a backpack because all the weight is on one side......... and from the link your case weighs 7.6kg before you put your gear in it.

Aside from that, storm cases are good kit - to me they appear as good as peli. I have a 2700 but it spends most of its time in the back of the car as transport protection. It is just too awkward to cart around for any length of time. I hope you get on better with yours than I do with mine. :)

Yes, if I take the whole lot out (very rarely), I can secure it to the car with a couple of chains and padlocks via the locking points.

If togging locally or getting the bus, I do prefer to walk as much as possible and I have been known to walk as far as 6 miles (on footpaths) with the Kata on my back...

I figure that a) I can literally keep all togging equipment at a central point, with bird and wildlife guides stored in the utility compartment b) It's very waterproof c) has rubber wheels, so I can go to local sites early in the morning without waking neighbours up and d) It'll save my back.

Erm...good point re carrying the case with weight being on one side. I find that this kind of thing doesn't affect the back, just feels like my hand is being pulled away from the wrist..I tend to experience sever discomfort when bending over then trying to straighten my back again, no so much sideways stress...

As for the size of the wheels, I can imagine the limitations. I think the wheels are a little larger on the im2720, but still not large enough to mean wheeling the case everywhere. My only remaining dilemma is whether to get the case in olive green or the more common black, bearing in mind I'm very much into wildlife togging..Mmmm..I can get the black delivered immediately or will have to wait 2 weeks for olive green...

Just an update!

Have ordered and paid for the black Storm im2720 case, with padded dividers and also the (lid) utility organiser, for things like Expodisc, sun position compass and wildlife/bird ID guides.

Looking at shops like Warehouse Express (£216 for the case plus only foam) I got an absolute bargain and will post a review and photos once everything is packed etc. etc.

Will be delivered sometime on Monday by TNT (next day express delivery) :woot:

How waterproof are Pelicases? Can they withstand being submerged briefly? I need one too as I do a lot of underground photography in old mines which are filthy and very wet etc and I need something that will not leak if it falls in the water.:)
 
I don`t know bud, it certainly withstands a good shower, being submerged in water................:suspect:.............don`t know.
 
I decided to go for the Peli 1600 with foam , mainly for safe storage at home and managed to get one for £127 del ( inc 10% off paypal voucher ) .
We used these for many years for transporting weapons in all weather conditions and despite abuse ( which happens when its not your own ) they stood up well .
