Thinking of getting a Pentax K-R as i like the size of it and really want to get back to a DSLR after having a G2 and G3 which i really cant get on with the way the EVF works.

Looked at Nikon and Canon but like the feel of the Pentax.

Has anyone on here got one or any advice? I would love to put a 50mm prime on it too. Thanks

Hi I went through the same thought process Canon Nikon or Pentax. In the end purchased the kr lovely camera really pleased still learning with it.

You can get cheap manual primes due the back compatibility of lenses.

Only downside is if you want an extra flash you are limited at cheaper end and less on fleabay

Summary a great camera

I had a samsung GX which is a rebadged pentax, great camera, the onboard anti shake will work with ANY lens, even old manual focus lenses and I even used the anti shake on a astro telescope!
The other good thing is there are more lenses available for pentax's than any other as its backwards compatible with just about the whole range of lenses.

What a 50mm prime for the KR that has auto focus as i havent a clue what to look for.

I'd say go for the KR, but as I have a Pentax I would say that.

However, you have handled one and like it, and the backwards compatibility and in-camera IS are also big plus points.

Old manual focus Pentax K mount lenses can be picked up fairly cheaply.

The only concern I've read about the compatibility of old lenses is the following -

PENTAX: ALL Pentax K-mount lenses will work on ALL Pentax bayonet bodies, including autofocus and digital. For "Program" operation with some models, you will need a Series "A" or later lens. A note of caution, though: there was a KA mount for Pentax, and also a KR mount for Ricoh program cameras. Both of these have the same K bayonet, but the location of electrical contacts is different between them so that they are not cross-compatible for program functions. ALSO, AND MORE IMPORTANT, it is possible for some KR lenses to jam on some models of Pentax cameras, and be impossible to remove or cause damage to the camera or lens. In particular, it is not wise to attempt to mount a KR lens in an Autofocus or Digital model of Pentax. There may be other incompatibilities as well, so proceed with caution whenever cross-mounting Pentax and Ricoh lenses and bodies.

- but this looks like something that is easily avoided.

I use a few old lenses with my Pentax with no problem and must admit I quite like the idea that I have image stabilisation with a lens I bought in about 1980.

Pentax are releasing a new 'affordable' 50mm f1.8 shortly to complement their 50mm f1.4. Theres not a set release date yet, but it'll apparently be somewhen in 2012.

You can use any K-mount lens on a Pentax DSLR (with the exception of the Ricoh ones as mentioned above), although when using those that are pre A series, (without electrical contacts to communicate aperture), you need to use manual mode and 'green button' the green button to get a shutter speed. You can also use the hugh collection of M42 lenses via an adapter (the K-mount was deliberately designed to allow this) so long as they have an auto/manual switch on them as the auto aperture doesn't work with the adapter.

I think the Kr is a great cary about Camera, light weight, can use any Pentax lens, 'K' onwards, also the M42 series with an adaptor, good low light ability, as for additional Flash units, the Pentax AF-540 FGZ Flashgun, is as good as any out there, although it costs more than the Kr!!

I have a Kr , a K5, also a Canon 40D, and a Fuji S2Pro, so not biased in any way:thumbs:

Dave.

What would be the next best thing, Canon or Nikon range? Thanks
