pentax MG problem

I was given a pentax MG and I've put new batteries in it but the electrics don't see to be working. It isnt something as simple as the fact there is no film in it is there? I don't really want to waste a roll to test that idea.

I hope some one can give me a fix to this :D

The camera will still work without film. It uses 2 LR44/A76 batteries 1.5 v or an equivalent. I dare say you've already checked, but just have a look to make sure they're the right way up. If I remember correctly, the camera will still work without batteries if you turn the dial to where it's marked as "100X", which is the flash synch speed. This is a mechanical speed, and I think the "B" setting is too.
 
Check the contacts inside the camera as well, with cameras this old theres maybe a bit of crud or corrosion on them, clean carefully with a pencil rubber.
Daft question but have you checked the "new" battries, it's not impossible to buy duff ones?
