I guess this is where I should post this?

So, after being over weight for flight hand luggage last year, I have two to get through this year! I think its time to invest in a vest.

Is it fact if you wear a photo vest with lenses and say a camera body the flight people will be OK as I am "wearing" the gear?

If so can anybody recommend a vest?
 
I bought a Domke vest for the same reason as you, had to ensure both Thomson and thomas cook check ins this year! Put the vest and a coat over your arm if it's too heavy to wear, they're pre occupied with weighing bags and don't even notice the vest. Once through check in and security, put your stuff back in the hand luggage and the vest in a carrier bag, works for me!

First of all: It would be a bad idea. You got to think about your safety in the event (touch wood it won't happen) that there are accidents, you would be better off if you could have freedom of movement by not wearing such a vest. Also in the very highly unlikely event of hijacking, you would rather want to be without such a vest for comfort.

Secondary: It would be easier to buy a hard case with padding inside for the majority of your kit which will go in the luggage hold while you pick the most important kit to carry on the aircraft, I mean, why would you need two hand luggage to bring on board? Sounds like you're bringing nearly every equipment you got, but what would you need nearly all the equipment you need?

Finally: You do not need to buy 'photographic vest' for the purpose of carrying photographic equipement, any sort of vests could do the job, even camping vests, combat vests, fishing vests, could do the job, mine is not a proper photographic vest, but it do me well. Well, point of note, don't buy those combat vests that have camouflage on them.

No! Too soon!

There are an increasing number of secondary checks at the gate and if they find that you carry-on is outside their weight limits the cost of putting it in the hold is much higher.

Wait until you're on board the aircraft.
 
I think it depends what type of gear you intend to use. I'm just back from India, 2 dslrs, 2 battery grips, a 500mm prime, a 70-300 zoom and 35-70 plus chargers, batteries etc, Monopod, batteries and grips went in my suitcase ( not camera battery or chargers they stay with me) cameras and lenses on the plane. I've worked behind the scenes at my local airport and peli casing my lens would be an absolute last resort and normally expensive. My waistcoat weighed 9kg hence I bought one that I knew would do the job year in year out, carry bag with lens 5kg. As for been hijacked I suppose I wouldn't give a toss about my gear then!

1) in such case it most likely won't matter in the end
2) try it yourself and report it back to us. I could bet on some gear going missing or being seriously damaged. Tripods and clothes will obviously go to hold, but anything else must stay in cabin luggage

Not great advice. Stick to driving around Africa and Italy in a Bentley four and a quarter.

I travel through the airports with pockets full on both combats and jackets, this is with a d7000 + 3 lenses and all housing equipment to take it underwater. I am yet to get questioned about whats on me, I do get some funny looks though ;-)

After watching how hold luggage is treated by handling staff around the world there's no way my photographic equipment is going anywhere near them padded or not!
 
All sorted got a fishing one from go outdoors £19.99 just the job and folds down small enough not to worry about :)

I would have like the Domke or Billingham offering but for at best twice a year outing £20 is just the job.
