Photobucket shrinking images?

I recently posted three pictures on a thread about long lenses. They were about 300KB each. Just out of curiousity I saved the files and checked and they had been reduced to about 100KB. The dimensions remained the same but some of the definition had been lost.

I did not use the bulk uploader which is known to shrink files.

Anyone else noticed this?

Photobucket recompresses images after they're uploaded. It's been doing it for years.

Hmm. I just checked with a file I have uploaded to both

Original, 340 KB

Flickr 340 KB

Photobucket 340 KB.



If you go into Photobucket's Account Settings, what do you have selected for Choose a setting for web sized copies of your photos to link and share? Mine's set to 4000 x 3000.

Edit: I have paid accounts with both, which might make a difference.

Thanks for the response Rob. As far as I can see, the cheapskate accounts do not let you change settings.

Photobucket did not used to shrimk files last time I checked which was a while ago.

Photobucket did not used to shrimk files last time I checked which was a while ago.

I have a paid account now, but started with the free account, it was possible to change the settings albeit the choice of image size was limited compared to the paid account.
