I have been asked to photograpgh a person doing a freefall parachute jump this afternoon.
The Sky looks as though its going to be a blue clear day.
Looking for any hints.
I thought i would use my D80 + 70-300 vr set to vr & active, shutter priority, what do you think & any ideas would be helpfull.

Thanks

Good luck, they'll probably be jumping from a massive height and deploy their parachute much before you have a decent shot of them.

However I could be wrong :)

At least you have the 300mm rather than a 70-200!

Just focus on getting the parachuter exposed correctly and in sharp focus. Ignore the exposure of the sky.

:lol: My feet stay firmly on the ground. :D
Hehe... wise decision I'd say!

Seriously though, make sure you take a few test shots of something against the sky first. You might need to up the EV and overexpose somewhat depending on your metering mode and prevailing conditions.

Good luck though matey, sounds like a bit of fun.

Thanks for the tips, looking forward to the challenge..

I doubt you'll get the free fall part with a 300mm but do a few tests - spot meter on the person - pick up focus on the person when they are tiny and stay with them - with focus on 'C' of course - start shooting when they are in range - shoot high speed bursts. You'll maybe only get the last 100ft or so - and that will depend if they are landing close to you.

Parachute inflation for tandems is 5000ft, you should be able to pick them out at around 1800ft, they are quite easy to track.

As they will be the last to land you'll have plenty of time to practice on the cameramen, but these land a little faster
