Hi everyone,

Im new to photography and am about to purchase a Nikon d90. There are a few courses in my area, eg, AS level, short 10week courses etc.

Would you recommend attending?

Id consider myself a creative person who if tutored in the ways of lighting, Photoshop, etc could enjoy some nice shots which I would love to post.

Just wanting to see what other poeple have / havnt done in terms of educating themselves!

Thanks

I'd go for the 10 week course. It'll be cheaper than the AS level one and to be honest you can pick up all the info you need from here. Depends if you want a recognised qualification or not.

well im only 16 so i have the advantage of going to college to do a BTEC national diploma in photography. i would recommend the BTEC especially if you want to go pro, the course doesnt need any specific grades for matures such as yourself.

short courses are very specific such as 1 week weddings etc. A level is a bit OTT and not needed that much. i would highly recommend a BTEC.

I did a City and Guilds in film photography when i started out. 35mm camera's are cheap and you will defo learn how to develop your own film, so saving on the time and cost at Jessops.

I found the course to be very useful in terms of learning how photography progressed through the years, techinical aspects of how an image is recorded on film, development techniques, and generally what happens when you press the shutter release.

I'm not saying i learnt a huge amount, TBH i have prob learnt more on this forum. But it did provide a good underlying knowledge that can be used as a foundation.

I did a ten week course at my local adult college last year and I'm now doing a year long course, one evening a week. Really enjoying it, it's much better value than the weekend courses and great for forcing you to take photos!
