Photoshop CS3 crash

Can't work out why this is happening, I open 100+ 1dsmk3 files (all around 10-14mb jpegs) they open fine and then I try to do something to one of them and CS3 crashes. Works OK when I have around 65 open at once.

Setup is mac pro (8 core 3.2 running 10.5.6) 10gb RAM with 3 scratch disks assigned to Photoshop (64gb, 500gb and 1tb of free space)

Any ideas as I would of thought there is enough memory/scratch space assigned to PS?
 
where are you viewing the jpeg size cos in windows the size is a lot less than when in PS, if i open a 1mb jpg PS shows it as 6mb so your 14mb jpeg could be 70-100mb in size then times that by 100+ you are pushing 10gig which is your amount of ram so this could be the issue, also why do you need so many images open at once? if its an issue work with less open at a time?
