Yes
So I want a slow shutter speed but my pics blown & apertures stopped out as far as it can, where do you go next.....

ISO.. ?

I'm using a Nikon so surely that should be taken care of with the auto ISO rating shouldn't it, or does that stop working on auto when you switch onto full manual?

Auto ISO is limited by the lowest ISO your camera can do - which isn't low enough

As Nick said, get an ND filter for your lens.

Auto ISO won't go below ISO200 but you have 1 more stop available if you go down to L1.

(it also won't let you up into the "H"'s at the top end either)

But realistically you do need ND filters if there is anything like light available.

Remember also not all lenses will be equal when it comes to minimum apertures though - some will only go to F20, whereas others will give you F32.

Auto ISO will still work on full manual but (as always) it depends where you're metering from as to how appropriate the result will be. If the pic's blowing and you're on auto ISO, take control of your ISO and set it at ISO200 or lower to ensure the camera's not doing something unwanted like bumping to ISO800 for a dark metered area.

You could always dial in ISO200 - L1, aperture priority (rather than full man) with min aperture, and meter from the correct point to see what the camera suggests as the shutter speed?

Good point

And even zoom lengths on the same lens can vary the minimum aperture - my Sigma 10-20 offers f/22 at 10mm but f/32 at 20mm

seems to be a lot of this slow shutter speed queries with nd filters as the answer
another could be waiting for lower light levels
my camera goes down to 64 iso but even then i can only get maybe 1/8

The nub of it was I wanted to take a photo with good light but a long(ish) shutter speed >1 second. I was having a problem to balance the exposure on a white background without blowing out the white background too much.

Think I may try and do the photo again to see if I can make it better with more control over ISO

Thanks :)
