Best thing to do mate, take your camera body along to a shop that does both and ask to try them out.

You can get all the opinions under the sun but only your will really be able to make the choice.

Would probably help if you told us the lenses in question...

I've had both of these lenses due to the missus buying the Sigma as a present and I bought the Tamron.

I sold the Sigma.. it wasn't great at focusing and don't think it was as sharp wide open

My opinions of course :)

Mike, i'm hanging on for decent reviews of the new Sigma 17-70

not avaliable in the Uk yet though and would probably take a while for reviews to fiter through.

Hi Al, i think the constant f2.8 makes the tamron 17-50 the winner for me, loving the bokeh effect on the example pics ive seen and the sharpness seems outstanding. Nice to have a lens that can deal with low light, i have my 50mm f1.8 but i feel i need something to have as a walk about lens that covers a nice usuable range and is capable. The 17-70 is variable so only f2.8 at the wide end which makes it less appealing to me.

My decision will be made today i think

Right, now we have the lenses that makes it much easier. The sigma is a good lens without a doubt but the Tamron trumps it in just about every respect.

remember the Image stabilising will be good for a couple of stops i would imagine

From what ive read IS/VR is more useful on longer zooms so for me on this lens probably not worth the extra £90ish between the 2 different 17-50 f2.8 versions. I like the idea the tamron will allow low lights shots at 50mm whereas the new sigma will probably be around f5.6 by 50mm which is a long way off the f2.8 available here.

The other thing im thinking about is having a walkabout that can still take nice wide landscapes shots, i have my sigma uwa 10-20 but if i took only one lens to use the tamron would save me missing a wide angle shot.

Best deal found so far £315 and confirmed stock for next day delivery

I really thinks its looking like an order being place for the tamron within the next hour.

I nearly bought the Tamron, but picked up a used 17-55 Nikon instead for little more money

So for me it's a used 17-55 or the Tamron -I've owned several Tamrons from a long time ago, loved them all

(I've owned a couple of Sigmas too - thought they were crap and sold on straight away :D)

DD

I'd try a pair of Tamron's - the VC and non-VC variants. Forget the Sigma.

The other alternative is a used Nikkor 17-55, which can be had for around £650 in decent condition.

Thanks all for helping in the last few hours, i have finally made my decision and the Tamron 17-50 F2.8 has just been ordered before the 12pm cut off for next day delivery.

This has been one of the hardest decisions ive had to make in a long time but i finally got there.

For me the example photos i have found for the tamron are outstandingly sharp, i have to admit i have seen some crackers from the sigma but in general every photo by the tamron is way ahead ;)

That's great - remember to post some example pictures when you get it - might help others when it's their turn making this decision

Sigma for me but I am on a budget I would buy Canon and will when I can afford it...lol
