Evening all,

Quick question relating to the Pocket Wizards, in particular the AC3 unit.

Assuming I am using flash in Manual mode, I believe the AC3 gives me 6 stops of flash control, ranging from -3 , 0 to +3.

This might sound like a really stupid question, but how does it know what actual flash output 0 (on the AC3) is?

Thanks!

Check the manual for the AC3, it's in there.

In manual +3 is full power and the reduction is 2 stops in 1/3 stop increments.

Thought it was 3 stops either way but not near mine t the moment

So when the AC3 unit is on 0, what power is the flash outputting?

Assuming everything is turned off, then you turn the flash on and put it on M mode, my flashes (580IIs) return to their previous setting - so is there a level of manual calculation to be done to ensure it is around 1/8th power...

So 0 = 1/8th
+ 1 = 1/4
+ 2 = 1/2
+ 3 = full

Sorry if it sounds like im being stupid here... but Im just making sure I understand exactly what the AC3 does

Thanks

I believe the PWs override the flash setting (I'll check later if you like).

Tbh, unless you're interested in the timing options for 2nd curtain sync, the Yongnuo 622s are probably a better bet.

Speaking as a PW user, if I was starting now I wouldn't buy them, I'd get the YNs.

I've checked the Manual and it appears that it works from the flash setting, so if you leave the flash on 1/1 then the AC3 will take it down in 1/3 stops to a third over eighth power, then setting it at 1/8 on the flash you get control down to 1/64.
