Trying to find some 1220 x 2440 x 50mm poly board. I thought I would find something from somewherelike B & Q but nothing yet:thinking:

The dvd i watched showed them being used as 'bookends' and backgrounds, quite versatile and can be redecorated to suit.

Sorry, nolink.The Americans refer to it as styrofoam. Its different from polystyrene. Shame Andygrif hasn't been back on line because I can't find it at B& Q
 
Try a builders merchant , ask for extruded polystyrene as apposed to expanded poystyrene. It's used for insulation, but doesn't crumble like the expanded stuff

Polyboard is used in the graphic industry for mounting prints and things onto.

Damn expensive - circa £5 for a A2 sheet (four sheets of regular A4 paper).

Usually about 3.5 - 5mm thick. It is very light which is an asset if your hauling it round.

I'm sure you will find something more appropriate and much cheaper.

Styrofoam is also used for making lightweight "plugs" for moulding fibreglass. I've never looked for it, but have read of its use as a soft reflector. And it should be a cheap building material, at least in greater thicknesses.
 
I can't think of anything in the UK that can be painted. The "Build Center" linky used to have a very good catalogue showing what was available.

I once made a very good background out of a 2x1 inch timber frame and thin ply on both sides to give it strength I painted a Gainsbourough style background on each side. example

If you need to paint it, give a wash with 4:1 water to PVA and you will then have a surface that can be painted.

I have asked on the US forums and they say the same as me.

You can buy the proper stuff in hobby shops and art supply stores in the UK, however for the sizes used in Lighting Essentials dvd (if that's the one the op is referring to) it would be very expensive...
