OK, had a bit of a moment here earlier and am wondering if first, anyone can tell me whter EOS doors are all made equal and secondly, if anyone has a spare door catch they don't want :(

No idea how or what happened but took the film out of the Elan today after playing yesterday, no problems, nor any hints of what was about to happen. Simple job, rewind, open door, remove cassette, shut door - do it all the time, right? Seems I managed to fall at the last hurdle and have somehow (and I have looked all over the floor) broken the catch in the camera body bit that hooks into the door bit. Dammit.

Ideas anyone? (preferably not along the lines of "I thought you were after an EOS 3 anyway..." since financially that's moving further and further into the future right now.

PS - damned finances... is it only me? Finally after quite some time managed to find a realistically-priced Hexanon f1.2 and bank says big nono :nono:

Had a quick shuftie at the eos-3 and eos-5, and they both have a hook fitted on the door. Unsurprisingly, given canon's annoying way of changing everything every time they release a new camera, the hook profiles are entirely different :(

It's not the door hook that's broke, it's the corresponding lock bit. I am considering surgery :D

from what i remember of the door latch mechanism, from when It fell apart on my Eos-3 when I'd to dismantle it to fix the selector dial problem, its not an over complex thing - a couple of springs and a bit of metal/plastic that slides up/down... I'd guess that it's the slidey thing that is having issues

Yup - problem is making something that will fit in the tiny space and still be solid/working.

Bit of sheet Titanium and a Waterjet?

Or sheet brass and a set of files

Bit of bent tin and a soldering iron... sorted :D

For now at least...

Gets me back out with a film at least... do that wi' ya digikal :D

At least you're getting out. I've been tied up at home working mos of the week, then finally as weather picks up, I'd another trip to the quacks with my knee :(

At least they're happy with the progress - and don't want to stick needles in me at the moment. Wish I was happy with the rate of progress mind, i've finally been given the green light to ride the stationary trainer bike, as long as I promise to jump off as soon as it starts to twinge... I'd be on there know, but knee's already acheing from all the prodding and pushing the knee specialist gave it

Loving the door-viewer fisheye By the way (y)

Ha. I got scan-guided needle stuff coming up on Monday... then risk assessment on Tuesday at work to see if I can go back part time!

Oh - and I did find the 28mm 2.8 FD lens - so now I've got a fast-ish 50mm and a wide angle for the A-1. That'll do me, I reckon.

What - so now the box you found is actually worth something? Result

Looks like you put things away like me :D

 lens was in the camcorder bag - can't for the life of me think why...

Fingers crossed for you next week then. I guess I'm lucky really - i'm self employed, work with computers from home, and don't have to do much in the way of on-site work, so I've got away lightly really. Just as well - no workee-no money, and I've an expensive film habit to feed!

I have the Ambermile workshops to keep up and running as well as a proper job... one or the other will have to go soon :(

It's Catch 21 and a half in the Colpepper camera bag too. One of my Nikon 601 bodies - a pedestrian bit of early 90s plastic fantastic - has died courtesy of a 2mm corner of chewing gum quality moulding. An otherwise fully working body dead for want of a properly designed lock.

Well, neither but to be honest, you can pick a replacement up for £15 so it's not really worth a repair (which is a terrible thing to say and I would add that if it were here I'd fix it!).

What's doubly frustrating is the camera is quite well made, if you like that gratuitously ergonomic, jelly mould, Ford Sierra look (which I don't, but that battle's been long lost). Except for the back, which is a squeezily thin wafer of resin barely solid enough to keep the light out. Which it no longer does.
Bluddy modern cameras.

Elastic band?

Nah, too springy. It's gaffer tape or nowt. But never fear, some ebay wins of an earlier and more robust epoch are on their way.
I still have that rarest of beasts - and not in a good way - a manual focus 601m in the bag. A mid-range autofocus camera with all it's autofocus bits removed. What were they thinking? At least it doesn't have that annoyingly loud DZZZZ...DZZZ noise as the AF hunts between the camera strap and Saturn.

I despair of you people sometimes...

I'm sitting here lazily polishing the UV filter protecting the very nice MC Rokkor PG 50mm f/1.4 that sits on the front of my X-700... I have already lovingly rubbed the MD 50mm f1/7 all over as it sits on the back up XG-1 body. Just took a finished film out of the Kodak Retina 1, another lovingly-rubbed wee beastie that I used this time rather than the Vitomatic IIa because I wanted to run a colour film through that wonderful Schneider-Kreuznach 50mm f/3.5. One day in the next week or so the postman will be delivering the much-looked-forward-to Konica AutoRex and my world will be complete (just as soon as I can raise the funds for that exceptional Hexanon 57mm f/1.2) but why am I telling you all this? No bloody AF on any of them... not one. Take a picture and all you hear is a click! (not even that if you forget to cock the Retina shutter). Heaven. Yeah, I got the elan and the dijickals it's true... but these are what make it. These are the ones I keep in my hand, no neckstraps/cases for these - I wanna be with them, hold them, as well as use them. AF? Would be like a hoard of damned mozzies following me around!

TBF the 601 is the only autofocus SLR I've owned and that was paid for by the single job that tempted me to buy it. I agree they're a damned silly idea, especially if you shoot candids. There's a whole generation emerging who don't understand differential focus, the zone system or why they're missing out.

I have to say in fairness that there are sometimes I *need* AF - what with being over 50 now and on the slippery slope and all. I don't have to like it or use it all the time though!

Just been reading this thread and had to spit out the proverbial coffee when I read that. (y)
