I'm looking to add a lens for shooting portraits to my D40. A bit in the dark as to which way to go so any advice would be great.

Cheers

Nick

What is your budget?

A 50mm f1.8 is always a good starter as a portrait lens and can be bought for about £70. The f1.4 version is even better but you are looking around 3 times the cost.

Depending on the type of portrait work you are doing and your budget you could also consider an 85mm, 105mm 24-70mm or 70-200mm. All can take very good portraits.

Cheers Rob, I've already got a 70-200mm, I like the sound of a 50mm f1.8 for £70, where would I find one of those?

The 50mm f:1.8 and the 50mm f:1.4 AF-D won't auto-focus on your D40, but the Nikkor 50mm f:1.4 AF-S will and will the Sigma 50mm f:1.4 EX DG HSM.

Thanks for the help guys, gives me something to go on.

Nice one.
