I've been asked to do some portraits of some children. I've done some portraits of children before and if I'm honest, I prefer children to adults alot of the time, because they're less conserved.

I haven't really done alot of group shots, usually just one person at a time or maybe too, - they want images of 4 at a time with a backdrop. :help:

I was wondering if there was any sites with posing ideas for something a bit quirky? I've tried looking on google but it comes up with lots of other peoples work, which is good for inspiration but I struggle to look through alot of it.

I have to be honest, I'm reluctant to do it ATM but it's a "keep the peace obliagtion" thing, IYKWIM? :( I can't really put it off all that much longer without WW3.

4 kids, two are 12, one is 11 and the other is 7. (3 girls, 1 boy, oldest 2 are not twins BTW, all brother and sisters)

The ones of them by themselves are easy enough and the ones of 2 together - or even 3 together, aren't difficult, but 4 together I'm a bit stumped for thinking of ideas that aren't going to make them look like 2 groups of 2 or one group of 3 with another one shoved in for luck.

I did a couple of pics when we were babysitting the other night, as the girlfriend wants to give the prints as a gift at christmas.

I found my fave pic was when I was shooting in between the poses.. don't stop clicking.

I think getting them to interact would be the best thing.

Otherwise
- laying on floor, looking up and you taking shot straight down at them
- Piggybacks
- one on top of the other (one sitting, one behind kneeling, next crouching, last standing).
- Put one in front kneeling then get everyone to put heads as close together as possible.
- Sitting one behind the other, in between each others legs
- Laying side by side on tummy
- three girls attacking the boy (in the nicest sense of the word)
- playing giant jenga, looking through a massive picture frame, all on a bean bag / chair

Hope that helps

In Google images search for 'four teenagers', it brings up some nice ideas

i think you nailed it...make it your own..
i let children do anything they want...and BE READY

One I tried the other evening (was with teens but would work just as well with youngsters). Put a sheet of A4 paper on the floor just in front of them. Then I said 'after three I want you all to try and sit on the paper. 1 - 2 - 3 go'

They all went for it. The only problem was they moved so fast none of the shots were without a bit of blur and I couldn't get a fast enough shutter. I repeated a couple of times but I wish I'd done a few more.

Oooo definitely giving that one a go!

You just need to pre-focus of course. And tell them before you count that they need to try and keep their eyes on you otherwise you end up with no faces.

good psychology that...i will take your photo after 3...take it ..then start counting
i always get in a group of three one with the head movement
great to have some way of shooting more than one frame at a time...

the best shots i have gotten have been lucky:|

Most of the best shots are when they are not posed so you either catch them between poses or by getting some action going.

OK try this for adult couples. Before you start shooting have a word with the woman. Tell her at some time during the shoot you are going to tell her to whisper sweet nothings to her partner - but what she is actually going to do is whisper the most filthy suggestion she can come up with.

Keep the camera going and you will get everything from blank expressions through shock to laughter and all completely natural. You just got to hope the lights recycle fast enough to catch it all.

Of course you do need to get an idea of the moral standing of your client before you try this one - there will be a few who might find it rather in bad taste :)

Andy, that's a fantastic suggestion - I HAVE to try that!

Got a text message last night saying that they only want pics of one of them, cause they know I'm not well. TBH, it doesn't make any difference if it's one of them or 4 of them it's gonna wear me out the same, but nevermind...said I'd do some of all 4 of them soon though, figuring that if they want me to do stuff for them for nowt, the favour can be returned, LOL, and I quite fancy a challenge!...well, soon anyway

Aww that's a pity. I admire your dedication in going ahead when you feel like ***** anyway.

i hope they shoot went well for you Magic :)

This is the "sort of salvaged" image (with much thanks to Matty for all his help and talking me through it!)

TBH knowing who it's for, I know that they'll be happy with it, even if I'm a bit synical and seeing every flaw like a sore thumb.
