Posting vertical format, a no-no IMHO...Sorted.

Yes
I'm not new to photography but, new to TP.

Something I have noticed is how, over such a short period, I've come to dislike the posting of vertical (portait) format.

I've seen on TP some fabulous shots in vertical format, only to be spoilt for me because I cannot see ALL the frame at once, I have to use the scroll wheel and scroll up and down.

Perhaps the posting of shots 800 high is just too much, or dosen't it work like that.

Dave,
What resoution is your screen set to?? Works fine for me here with space top and bottom spare

Agreed as above, im using a 15" laptop screen at present and its fine.

Maybe your resolution on your monitor is set too low?

If you use firefox, pressing/toggling F11 removes all menus and tabs from the browser view and enters a sort of "full screen" mode. Same in IE but not as good.

Most browsers these days you can also hold control and scroll down to zoom out (depending on whether you have set to zoom text only or zoom everything)

17" monitor, resolution 1024 x 768

But I also use AOL which tends to take up a lot of screen.

If it was me, i would ditch the AOL browser and use something more modern and functional such as Firefox, Safari, Chrome ....or if you must Internet Explorer

Woooo - don't see many people using 1024x768 these days - even low spec laptops tend to be next size up.

Given you are using a 17" monitor I suspect it will probably support higher resolution.
Definitely worth a trying.
If you are using Windows, then right click anywhere on your desktop and it's either called Properties or Personalize depending on the version of Windows - find the tab that talks about Screen Resolution and see what's offered.

Failing that, then finding a way to hide the toolbars you are not using will help. earlier suggestions are spot on.

Quite ironic as we have a thread running in FD asking for the limit to be raised to 1024!

Dave, I assume that mine was one of the threads to which you refer as you commented as such yesterday. I have a 17" laptop and the resolution goes out to 1440 x 990. As others have said, I would ditch the AOL stuff and use a dedicated browser, Firefox is definitely recommended

Thanks for all the advice lads.

I raised the resolution as advised but didn't like it, I've been on 1024 x 768 for 10 years.

Still couldn't see the whole frame anyway.

I seem to remember seeing a resize image to fit scree option in IE, and Firefox probably has something similar.

I'm afraid you are in the very small minority these days, I'm one of the few still using CRT monitors and even I have a higher vertical resolution than that (1600x1200 each on a pair of decade old 21" CRTs).

I wouldn't support a vertical height of more than 800 pixels though as most monitors are 16x9 now rather than 4x3 so the vertical height is more restricted.

Same button for IE fullscreen mode.

How about just zooming out slightly?

Or change your monitor so it is in portrait orientation? But then i guess you will moan about pics in landscape, but it will sort your portrait picture viewing issue out :)

Or 3rd option is to get a larget res screen.

How can you use 1024x768?

Everything must look nasty! Really couldnt be without my 24" @ 1920x1200. You can get a very nice 24" monitor with M-PVA panel for under £200 these days.

On a CRT you can change the resolution without getting the pixelation effects that occur on LCDs if you move away from the default resolution.

Hi Dave,

I would recommend getting used to a higher resolution, you can make the icons and text bigger on Windows if that is your problem.

Otherwise, if you enjoy browsing 1990s style then you have to take the rough with the rough...

Cheers

Unfortunately that does pretty much sum it up. Might be better to give the higher res a go and increase icon size so they match what you are used to.

Funny thing is, as a mod, if I have to scroll a portrait images on either of my desktop screens, then its a good indicator someone has posted one too big

I have changed the resolution to the largest my monitor will accomodate
1280 x 1024 amd the text to 'largest'.

I can now see ALL of the vertical shots but, the text is still pretty small, I'll have to just try and get used to it.

In internet explorer, go to View -> text size to help

On a CRT you can change the resolution without getting the pixelation effects that occur on LCDs if you move away from the default resolution.

Yes Im fully aware of this, but 1024 is just horrid. How anyone can work with it is beyond me!

get a bigger monitor lol

Just right click and choose View Image and let this madness stop :bat: it's that easy :rules:

Dave, not being funny, but have you had your eye's checked recently? You may have an eye problem creeping up on you.

Also LCD screens do not display clearly unless they are at their native (maximum) resolution. They can work at other lesser resolutions, but badly.

If you are thinking of a new LCD and still want a "big" display then check the pixel pitch of the displays. I'm using a samsung 26" (expensive but dissapointingly not the best) with 1920x1200. Lots of screen area but carefully chosen because I'm doing embroidery design work (its a CAD system) where I need to see the detail very clearly and position the cursor accurately. The pixel pitch is bigger than a more standard 22" or 24" with the same resolution and also bigger than a 30" (2560x1600) which works out as a "small" display.

Beware monitors that claim to rotate, this samsung rotates but really annoyingly is useless when vertical because of colour shift as it has a limited viewing angle, the right eye sees it fine but the left eye gets a purple mess, yuck

Thank you it works.

I'm still on 1024 x 768 and large text.

Using IE, remove the task bar and hit F11.....Yipeeeeeeee Full screen viewing.

We are tight in Cardiganshire, known as Cardies we are.

Buy a new monitor, my a**e. :D

Haha love it!

I'm using an allegedly 7 year old 1024x768 monitor... nothing wrong with it!!

Yes!!!

And I have three CRT monitors stacked in a pile
