Hi All,
I'm a bit stuck at the moment.
In my bag i have a 12-24, 17-50 2.8, 50 1.8, 300 2.8, for Canon.
I have the gap between the 50 and 300 to fill. I would like a prime at F4 or less.
something between 135 and 180 would be great.
I have around 3-400 to spend on it.
I know I can't quite stretch to the Canon 135L which would be lovely.
I used to have the Sigma 150 2.8 Macro and loved it but had to sell it as I wasn't using the macro enough, and had a 70-200 2.8 which I've also sold.
I don't mind an MF M42 lens if it's good quality.

Any advise will be greatly appreciated.

Regards
Nick

There are a couple which immediately spring to mind, such as the 85mm f/1.8 (maybe a bit short), and the 200mm f/2.8 L.

You could also go for a macro lens if you want, something like the Sigma 150mm f/2.8, Canon 100mm f/2.8 etc.

I'm sure there are a wide range of MF lenses at around 135mm, usually f/2.8 or f/3.5, but I've got no clue as to the good ones. You're not a million miles away from the price of a used 135L though, is there any chance of saving a bit longer? If you really like one, you're probably going to end up buying it at some point anyway, and you could lose money buying a lens in the meantime!

I had the 150 macro , great lens, just shame I don't use the macro anymore.
the 200 is a bit long, and I could get a 70-200 cheaper.
How much is a 2nd hand 135L ? I think this will be the best option for me.

I can get a new one for around 650. So surely a 2nd hand one would be around 400 mark

Where can you get a new one at £650?
Camera price buster is showing Amazon are £880, Warehouse Express £930.

Second hand 135 F2 would be my choice, I have one, it's got the most beautiful bokeh, sharp as a pin and fits like a glove on a FF body.

One of the sharpest L lenses around.

Ebay from HK are around 650. I've got a few from there and no problems.

You don't HAVE to use the macro abilities. I use my 100mm macro as a regular prime lens a lot of the time, it's nice for close-in portraits, headshots, that sort of thing.

I don't really follow your logica bout the 200mm vs 70-200, the 200 L costs £499 new, and the 70-200 costs £924! Which is a pretty sizable saving!

I've seen second hand 135Ls go for around £600, so if you've got £400 to spend, I'd save the rest personally and go with that!

the 70-200 Sigma 2.8 can be had for around 450. and more usable as 200 is a bit too long anyway.
I know I don't need to use the macro for macro shots, but the long focus travel is a bit of a pain. I know you have the focus limiter. As I said I had the sigma 150 2.8 and loved it,but I'd like to try something else.

well I've ordered it since its about 100 quid cheaper than anywhere else.
I'll let you know how I get on with it.

If you use the focal length then you can't buy better than this lens. It's stunning in the right hands and worth waiting and saving extra until you can afford it. If you decide you don't like it you can sell it pretty close to RRP - it keeps going up and up in price and people are still buying it and people also find it hard to part with! For a 5D it's great.

I remember doing a wedding with the 17-40L and 135L with a 1Ds MKIII and it was a stunning combination - colours/contrast all superb and F2 really helps you to isolate your subject and gives your photography a unique/quality feel.

I wouldn't consider the 135 SF unless you're actually going to use the SF feature. Plus, it's a very old lens the focus system isn't great and you'll end up selling it. It's 2.8 as well, and you said you got rid of the 70-200 2.8?

Thanks for your advise, I'll give the SF a go since its 100 quid cheaper then anywhere else :)

It seems to be the general opinion that the 135L is quite good.
Maybe I'll buy 5 more 135 SF from amazon and sell them :)
that should get me close to the 135L :)

I had one and I never got it out of the bag 135L is an amazing lens seen em for 600 s/h on here :O

I'm v tempted by a 135L atm but I want to spend the money (I don't have) on some lights to make me more money
