Prime Nikon lens to Canon

I have a 24mm Nikon lens and wonder if it would be worth using it with an adapter on my 500D.

Only if they contain optics to obtain infinity focus when the registration distance of the lens is shorter than that of the body it's being mounted to: Canon FD (42.00 mm) to Canon EF (44.00 mm) being a case in point.

Nikon F mount lenses don't need that as the registration distance is 46.50 mm and Canon EF, leaving 2.5mm in which to fit an adapter, which is then essentially a metal shim, much like an extension tube.

You won't get autofocus, you will have to manually stop down to meter, but optically it should perform as well as it would on a Nikon body.

You can pick up a cheap adapter for less than ten quid. I reckon it's worth a go. Nikon make some nice wide lenses.

I think they can - if they are not machined precisely, which results in tilt effect (tilted focal plane) and other nastiness

Thanks for the reply`s, I am interested to see the quality against the 18-55, I want to avoid a 50mm prime due to the crop factor.As an adapter is so cheap I will try it out.

Try it. The XXD series give you manual and aperture priority with Nikkors and an adapter. I don't know about the 500D but I can't see any reason why it wouldn't, and it should be easy enough to find out.

You will have to focus manually, which can be a bit of a bind on a crop VF, but it does work. I do it quite often and my 57 year old eyes aren't as good as they used to be!
