Hi all,
I have been asked to take photos of a golf competition presentation at my golf club tomorrow evening about 6pm. Being new to dslr your advice would be greatly welcome .
The equipment that I have is, Canon 600D, kit lens 18-55, 50-1.8 lens and Canon Speedlight 270ex flash.

One problem I can see is that they will be standing with windows around them, this could be an advantage or not, as the lights in the room are rather dim. I will be standing around 10-12ft away.
My feelings are to use 18-55 lens using centre weight metering and “P” mode.
I’m not sure if I should use flash, bouncing it off the ceiling.
Advice Please.

In low light and subjects close to a window- I would opt for the 50mm f1.8, shoot at f2.8 or f4.0 focus on the eyes

for group shot then the wider end of the kit lens (18m - 55mm)

Bouncing flash from the ceiling will result in overhead light not always the best option for shots with people in them, maybe bounced from a wall to the side of subjects would be a better option, in my opinion

for the actual presentation, 50mm face on with direct flash

See which way the building faces and see if the sun comes in through the windows or not at 6pm and later.
I would think centre weighted, AV mode apperture of 4 or 5.6 and iso high enough to give you 1/80s or 1/60th at the lowest higher if you can. The flash should act as fill the window light shouldn't matter that much.

watch your flash doesn't reflect in the windows

thank you for the posts so far.
I will be facing east, so at that time of day the sun should not be a problem.
With regards to flash, I have not used flash with the 600D,what settings in camera do I need to set if any,so that it will work automatic if that is the correct term. I keep looking at the manual but cannot really understand it with regards to flash.

Set your zoom length so your not wasting flash power and I think thats your only other option on the 270EX? with the exception of the power switch, leave it in ETTL and let it work everything else for you.

Little John,
Please can you explain what you mean by"Set your zoom length so your not wasting flash power"

the flash has 2 folal length options I believe extended is 50mm pushed back is 28mm if your zoomed in to 50mm and the flash is at 28 mm light is wasted out to the sides where if it is zoomed to 50mm and your at wider then the light should be only covering the centre area of the image so your edges will be darker.

The 430 and 580 change their folal length with the lens as you zoom in and out but the 270EX2 is manually focusing you pull the front forward or push it back.

Thank you for the explanation. So have I got this right, if using below 50mm keep it in,above 50mm have it out. Boy have I a lot to learn !.

Hi all,
just an update, as stated in original post I had problems with back lighting from windows. I used the settings of P mode, centre weighted and 270ex flash with diffuser on. Diffuser could have been a bad Idea! I don't think the photos have come out very good. Your views please. Would I have been better setting a meter reading on the windows then focus on the person ? rather than metering/focus on the person.
Here is one sample of the photos taken. I can post the exif of the original raw file if needed.

If you're taking a photograph of a presentation as a record of the event, you don't have to take the photos as prize/certificate is handed out. If the main venue is poor, you can always take "formals" afterwards in a better spot. Allow the presentation to finish, then get the participants outside and away from the Mens Working Club decor..

Odds are that they only chose that corner to do the presentation so that it wouldn't interfere with the buffet and bar, no need to stick with it for the photographs if it's a poor choice.

The other option is to close the curtains
