Problem with D7000 and Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 EX

Hi guys,

I wonder if you can help...

I am getting this message after attaching my Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 EX DG to my new D7000.
I get this message only If I am attaching the lens to a switched on camera. When it's turned off, after attaching the lens it won't even switch on!
I have tried to move the aperture ring from its locked position (f22) and the camera shows values from f0 to f7.

Is the lens not compatible? :/ :suspect:

Sigma have to rely on reverse engineering to discover how to make their lenses compatible with Nikon camera bodies (same with Canon I believe), it may be a case that the lens chip does not recognise the body, this is likely to be the case if it is an older lens.

It could be that your battery is low.
 
The camera was acting the same with battery on 24% so it might be something else.
My first though was: chip.
The camera works with Nikkor 80-200mm f2.8 without any problems so I assume there must be something wrong with my lens.

Might be worth phoning Sigma up and asking if they know what the problem is. Could need rechipped but I don't know.

Here's their info on rechipping and what not - the number at the bottom works, just ask to be put through to their service department.

They weren't able to rechip a lens I acquired from ebay, but it was ancient and they didn't have the parts. Fingers crossed they'll be able to advise you.

I used to have problems with a D2x and a Sigma 30 f1.4. In my case the lens wouldn't focus and the battery indicator on the camera flashed that the battery was flat. The camera worked fine with my other lenses and the lens worked ok with my other body. The problem only happened when the lens was first mounted on the body. If I gave the lens a slight twist after mounting it everything worked fine. I put it down to some sort of alignment problem between the camera and lens electrical contacts.
 
Eh...

I might as well not re-chip it (tariff 5: £85.99...) and buy a new lens.
Paying that much seems like a waste of money, knowing that I can use this lens with my D3 without any problems.
 
I've had a similar error with the D300/80-200 combo although in that case it was F6, this happens because the camera doesn't recognise the lens and assumes (according to Nikon) "No lens attached or non-CPU lens attached without specifying maximum aperture."

Being that the D7000 is so new the theory about the lens needing a rechip sounds plausible...
 
Is there any chance this can be fixed under 3 years warranty that I got for this lens? :/
 
Just to let you know guys:

If my lens is still under warranty (and I believe it is), Sigma will change the circuit for me for free.
Waiting time: up to 3 weeks.

I have a photo shoot this weekend so I will send my lens to them on Monday.
Will let you know how long it took them to fix it.
 
UPDATE:

Sigma is back, and IT'S WORKING!

I have sent it to Sigma in Welwyn Garden City on Tuesday last week and got it back today, shipped with UPS for free.
The lens was covered with 3 year warranty (EX series) so they changed the circuit for me completely for free.

It came back with all caps and filter which is always good ;)
