problem with ma lappy

It's a Compaq ,every time i try to turn it on the little green ' on ' light flashes quickly then it switches off .The wife had problems with the charger lead ,a bad connection ,so am wondering if there's been a power surge and it's damaged the lappy . Anyone have and ideas?
 
HAVE YOU TRIED A DIFFERENT POWER LEAD? if it has got a flat battery, and the charger is nackered i would expect it to do something similar
 
just sounds like the battery is flat to me.

try another compaq charger if you know anyone that has got one, or track one down online, after market ones can be really cheap sometimes.
 
Thanks for the input ,should have mentioned in my first post ,my daughter has the same laptop and a working charger ,still the same result.Took the lappy to a so called expert ,wife dropped it off at the start of the week ,she phoned the following day.His reply was "not a great laptop ,can't fixed it basically "
 
nice, doesnt sound like he knows whats wrong by that description. try another would be best.

he might mean the lappy is a bit old and wouldnt be worth the hassle or cost.

while it is plugged in but not on, does a light come on to say it is charging?
 
Maybe a problem with the power supply within the laptop. As your daughter has the same laptop switch batteries. If it then boots OK it sounds as though it may be the internal charger circuit, or similar. Whilst on a desktop these are relatively easy to replace, depending on the circuit board it may not be easily repairable.

First things first though, swop batteries ( ensuring the "new" battery is fully charged ;)) and see what happens
 
No sign of any life when the charger is plugged in... not...a...sausage.... .How old is old nowadays ,the lappy's just over a year old..

Swapped batteries still the same...so i just don't know .Huh !!! the guy in the shop said he definitely could not sort it ,but, he said he could do us a great deal on a new one.Yeh,right, i bet he could :thumbsdown:
 
One of the problems with lappies is that once out of warranty many local pc repair companies do not want to fix them as the lbour cost in dismantling them to get at the damaged component inside can be quite high for them.

do a search on google and you will find many companies who will fix them but you have to courier it to them.
Depending on age it might not be worth it and there are some really good bargains around for new ones.
 
Sounds terminal to me. My son had a similar problem with a Evesham laptop a couple of years ago. Turned out to be cheaper to buy a new machine, cheaper than the original and better spec'd too

Funny you should say that (or not in my case) took the lappy into Inverness today ,the nice chap in the store said the motherboard is capoot :bang: ,fixing it would cost in the region of £250-£300 :eek::eek::eek:

i work for a company that repair warranty HP laptops. Might be able to get some info or possibly service manual for your machine that may supply a little more help.

What's the full model no, should be located underneath?

Very kind offer sir... Model number Compaq C555EA ,it's a yr and 5mths old .. Thanks again :thumbs:
 
Dunno about Compaq but that symptom on a Dell means the memory has unseated. Has it been dropped or knocked recently?

There's a very high chance it's had a knock or two .I'm quite knacky ,would i be able to investigate this myself,the store wants 50quid+labour just to source the problem :eek:
 
I'm not familiar with that laptop but if you look at the underside you will see a couple of removable panels. One will house the memory stick/s. If it's only a year old it should be DDR type and there might be a sticker somewhere to indicate you are in the correct panel.
Remove the screws and the panel and you should see one or two strips of memory. There will be a spring clip mechanisim at the sides that you will have to prize outwards thus releasing the memory strip. Take it out and give it a gentle wipe and replace making sure that it reseats correctly!
The strip/s will only fit in one way.

That's the best I can explain but if you take your time you should be OK.

Removed memory sticks ,gave them a clean,even removed the hard drive also cleaned them all and replaced to no avale :bang::bang::bang:

Have to say,a big thanks to everyone for their help :clap::clap::clap:

Make sure you keep the hard drive.

Apart from containing personal info,they make great external storage
devices via an in-expensive Ebay caddy for around £8 :thumbs:

Try Laptops Direct on Dunbarton Road in Glasgow. They are pretty good and specialise in laptops - always have parts and laptops stripped whenever I go in! lol
