Progressively upgrading, various questions..

Hi all

I'm putting money aside to get the lens I want, eventually want to get to a 70-200mm IS mkii with a x2 extended, but I'm playing the long game, I have other hobbies that swallow my cash too, so may be a slow process, but np, i'll enjoy trying various lenses along the way.

I just have the 55-250IS at this range at the moment.

I fancied a longer lens, but being sensible about it, I don't think I'd use a long lens as much as I would something this size, and hope once i get to my aim, I'll have all the bases covered, well from 70-400 anyway.

Rather than just having my cash sat burning a hole, I thought i may as well save and trade up along the way, the path I envisage is

70-200 f/4 L
70-200 f/4 L IS or 70-200 f/2.8 L
70-200 f2.8 L IS
then tadaaaa 70-200 f/2.8 L ii
Adding the extenders somewhere along the way

My questions are

1) Any comments on the route ?
2)anybody done/doing the same ?

3)Also, I'm thinking to give me extra focal length when I need it....for now...has anybody tried the f4 L with a 2x extender ?

I know it's not ideal, and would be MF only, and about the drop in light and image quality, but has anybody actually tried it and if so with what results ?
I know it would work fine with the x1.4 (I think ?)

4) Do you think i'll see a big difference in image quality between the 55-250mm IS and the F4 L even without IS ?

Hi Russell

Plenty of people have done and will do the upgrade path as more often than not it's the easy way to go.

The 55-250 is a belter of a lens, but not in the same boat as the 70-200 L range.

The 1.4TC works well with the 70-200 F4 lens.

I'd be tempted to upgrade to the F4 lens when finance allow and you'll be very pleased with it. Then just save up and jump to the F2.8 mkII if that is your end goal. Personally don't see the benefit of working your way through all the lenses to get there (unless there is one at a fantastic price you can't refuse), although you wont loose much money on the L lenses when you sell on, you will loose some and the end result is the mkII will cost more.

You'll not be disappointed. I have the 70-300IS and was very pleased with it. Bought the F4 and was blown away with it. The 70-300 now is sat there looking at me as it hardly gets used.
