Having only started with my EOS450D 9 Months ago I only had the 18-55 Kit Lens and bought a Sigma 70-300mm Zoom. The 18-55 Lens has just died Err01 and I have researched with the kind help of these forums my next buys.

This is my proposed kit list to hopefully cover most situations as I enjoy photographing Landscapes, Wildlife and Portraits.

I would appreciate any comments or possible improvements to this list but of similar costs as I have a limited budget before I go shopping.

Sigma 70-300 F4-5.6 DG OS (Already owned)
Tamron SP 10-24mm f3.5-4.5 Di II
Canon EF 50mm f1.8 MK2
Sigma DC 17-70MM F2.8/4.5

I'm going to be controversial and say

16-35 f/2.8 - landscapes / portraits
70-200 f/2.8 - wildlife / portraits

It will set you back a bit, but at least you wont have to faff around with an uncountable amount of lenses and utilities.

Keep it simple. Keep it efficient.

except that 2.5k on lenses and I doubt the op wants to spend that.



what's your budget then we can advise properly
 
Hi Chris,

What sort of budget do you have?

The Canon EF 50mm f1.8 MK2 (nifty fifty) is a very well regarded lens due its relatively large aperture, low cost and image quality. If you are used to a zoom, then it might feel somewhat limited in the field. I think the majority of people would agree it is worth having in your kit bag for the aperture, cost and image quality.

The other two lenses are ranging from ultra wide to mid-range zoom. I recently got the Canon ultra wide and its is spending all its time on the camera - this will depend on what your primarily shoot of course!

I know this is probably not what the OP wants, I'm just being facetious; for no apparent reason really.
 
Thanks for the comments, budget is limited so I have about £1k to spend
but I also want to get a 430EX ii Flash and some Filters so the lens budget
is about £700. I know the Nifty Fifty is not too expensive so I could buy that seperately. So £700 for two lenses that cover a decent range or one more expensive lens. I do photograph Landscapes, Wildlife and Protraits and already have my 70-300 zoom so what should I buy?

I don't shoot Canon so don't know the lenses you talk about. My advise would always be to buy the very best - so buy one really good lens that you'll keep and be happy with.
 
For the £1k you have,if i might suggest:

Getting a Metz 48 Af-1 from here http://www.srsmicrosystems.co.uk/458/Metz-Mecablitz-48-AF-1-Digital-Flash---Canon-Fit.html.
It's £135 and got the Digital photo Gold award last year when they reviewed it,Above the Canon 430exII.it's also got a sweet little model lamp(its weird to describe but its useful).Ive used both Flashes,and the metz is the one i went for.The recent version of it,the 50 Af-1 is the same flash,just better power reserves.

For the two lenses, Ive got my Eye set on a Sigma 17-70/2.8-4 Os Hsm,

The Telephoto I would go for,is Canon's 70-200mm f4.
http://www.warehouseexpress.com/buy-canon-ef-70-200mm-f4-l-usm-lens/p12848. £480, Yeah,its not got an Is,which is useful for Wild life.You could boost the Iso,which will increas shutterspeed aswell. But alot of Landscape photographers i know swear by this lens. Also keep in mind that your mounting it to a Crop sensor'd body. So effectivly it'll be closer to a 110-320mm.

Altogether it comes to around £965(give or take a few pence). You can either spend a little more and Get a 50mm/1.8,Good little lens,I have one and it's allways on my Camera.
Or...Spend it on Beer!

Great shout and links cheers, never heard of the Metz but will look into it now. £35 left sounds like a night out to celebrate my purchases. I have now been checking reviews so long I'm going review blind .... all blurring into one so time to take the plunge and get some kit.

Haha, No worries Chris.

I dont think you can go wrong with the Kit i've listed,It covers you from wide to mid length Telephoto. And like you'll read, Reviews a re good on all the Gear :).

Just abit Jealous ive not got a grand to buy it all :P
 
£35 isn't enough for a night out though!! :)
 
Oh 1 Grand to spend....

Im kinda biased, so I'm gonna suggest kit I already have (bar the 17-55 )....and its gonna stretch your budget a little.

Canon 10-22 or 17-55 Canon, Canon 50mm f1.8, Canon 580exII.


Personally I would rather buy one great lens than two good lenses, of course sometimes the lines between great and good aren't always huge nor I am disputing the advice above. Each suggestion is perfectly sound.

In the coming year I would probably sacrifice the Sigma 70-300 for the Canon 70-200 as mentioned by John, if that can be afforded.

There reason for the expensive flash is primarily for the Master mode. Now this will be an unused feature in a single flash setup, however if you got a 430ex or even another 580ex in the future you would have E-TTLII, off-camera for portraits. Obviously if you prefered manual flashes with RF602 radio triggers then a 580 would be overkill.

I guess it depends how much you are into this photography hobby :love: Typically people will end up upgrading to the higher end kit anyway so it will ultimately be cheaper to buy this first time round.

So borrow an additional 1k, buy the best....and have a really good night out with the change:thumbs::bonk:

I would try to fit Canon 70-200mm f/4L and Tokina 12-24mm f/4 as they are significantly better than the ones listed above. Tamron 10-24mm can be particularly bad - softer than 18-55!
