So the time is upon us when the gamers get the other 2 next gen consoles rammed down their throats, Sony and Nintendo unveil their respective machines, i wonder if any of us either give 2 hoots or intend to get a PS3 or whatever? Personally i think a PS3 will be good, basic system will cost around £350 with 20gb HDD and Blue Ray dvd drive(though not through HDMI, just compnant)with the PS game back catalogue....

the PS3 will suck, TBH

Personally - when I want to play games, I use my PC, and my DS. I won't bother with one of these because all my TV's are worse than my PC monitor by a long way. (And all my money drains into the "Photo equipment" category)

They've just announced pricing for PS3 - $499 in the US, 499Euro in Europe.

That should mean that in the UK a PS3 will set us back £340, but of course, Sony love to screw us over, so you can guarantee that they'll price it in the UK at £399 minimum, if not £499.

id like to think that wont happen, but you know it will...it always happens to us..

apparently will play BRdvd on both versions of ps3, one iwth hdmi and one without....still waiting for the fanboi mouth-frothing to go away on the various forums before i try and dig out the facts though:geek:

£350 for a console? They must be mental. I won't even consider one of these things until they are sub £150.

Having said that, the Wii (snigger!) looks like it will be great. Would love to play Zelda on that with the motion sensing controller <makes sword slashing motion>

;)

Fact is, they could put it on sale at £1,000 and there's a certain class of person who would still buy it.

Yep Gfk, that person is what I call a "sweaty dave". You are right though, people will pay for it. I won't be doing so though.

Um you're kinda wrong there. Its £340 for the base 20GB model and the 20GB PS3 will not feature inputs for memory sticks, SD or compact flash cards. Nor will it offer any Wi-Fi options or any HDMI output. If you want the best PS3 possible it will be £410. The PS3 will be out on Nov 17th. The Xbox 360 is already out and will soon have a USB HD-DVD addon. The Nintendo Wii will be out in the 4th Quarter of 2006, Oct/Nov/Dec. No pricing details yet.

Now throw the specs out the window. Forget about all that jargon. What launch games are there for the PS3? I haven't seen those details announced anywhere yet. I have seen that MGS4 won't be out till 2007. Thats probably the Japanese version too. GTHD doesn't interest me as I have GT4. FF13 hasn't yet been given a date but I'm sure it will be 6 months to a year after the Japanese release. The whole back catalogue thing doesn't interest me for the PS3. I have a PS2 and a PS1. So based on all this I won't be getting a PS3 on launch.

However, I have just been watching the Nintendo conference and I will be getting the Wii on launch. The new Zelda game is a launch title. I was already sold on the Wii from the moment they said back catalogue. The difference between the Wii and the PS3's back catalogue is that they will download to the machine so I don't have to worry about swapping carts. Also I don't have a SNES/NES so I'm looking forward to those features. That aside the controller makes games playable in a whole new way. You play baseball as you would. You play tennis as you would. You can cook things, hula, weight lift, etc. Metroid Prime is going to be playable in a whole new way. Every game they launch will be playable in a whole new way. For this reason I will be getting a Wii on launch as will my friends who never buy consoles. Its the biggest change to consoles since the jump to 3D imho.

Next-gen graphics are what people always seem to want, but next-gen games is what should be offered.

I fully agree with you. I never bought a PS2 as a lot of the games were the same. I bought a Gamecube on launch though (Woolworths discount at the time). And although I lost money on it as they weren't very popular, it had some of the most engaging games i'd ever played.

Wii + Zelda = winner

I have XBox and PS2 at moment and pretty much only plant on the xbox. So I'll be getting the 360 when the price comes down a bit (sub £200) and maybe they'll release a version with inbuilt HD-DVD too (??? ). Loved PGR2 on Xbox so looking forward to PGR3 (when the price of the console comes down).
Not really interested in the PS3 unless they bring out an absolute essential game, but I've not seen anything in the line-up yet that fits that category to me.
I'm definitely considering the Wii as a purchase at launch though - without repeating what Petemc said above - there are so many interesting ideas about the Wii :geek: .

edit: just noticed what feenster said above .... come on Zelda :D :D :D

They announced that a few months ago :D It does look great. Lots of touch screen interactivity.

I think I would have a 360 if they brought out a new version of Shenmue for it. I love that game.

For any of your "Wii'ers", there are some great game videos on www.nintendo.com (including some shots of Zelda).

Edit: Oh I love Nintendo. Look what they have announced at E3: http://e3.nintendo.com/games/ds/legend_of_zelda_the_phantom_hourglass/ A new Zelda game for the DS! Looks superb too.

Matt

Just been watching the new Zelda vids on Gamespot and the Wii version has some cool features (speaker in controller etc).
Just looked at PS3 controller - it has analogue buttons (xbox anyone ?) and motionsensors (Wii ??) - no wonder they've had to delay it :cautious:

Oh and don't get me started on Shenmue, oh how I need them to finnish that series..awesome :crying: . Makes me feel like dusting off the Dreamcast :D

lol @ fanbois

PS3 r0x0r \0/ M$ sucks donkey balls and Wii is....

*snigger* runs off laughing

I sold my PS2 recently. Got 15 original games if anybody's interested - all boxed and in 'as new' condition:

Gran Turismo 4: Prologue
Gran Turismo 4
Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec (Platinum)
Moto GP 3
Medal of Honour: Frontline
Medal of Honour: Rising Sun
Stuntman (Platinum)
GTA: Vice City
GTA: San Andreas
Driver 3
F1 Championship 2000
World Championship Snooker 2003
Brian Lara International Cricket 2005
Timesplitters 2
Hitman 2

They should concentrate on gameplay rather than graphics etc... I'm amazed to see kids rather play basic games on the net than their Consoles . Bring back Hungry Horace ;)

Hungry Horace?

Now there's a blast from the rubber-keyed past!

Jet-pac, LLamatron, Attack of the mutant camels, elite, manic miner (minor?), attic-atac. All brilliantly playable games with rubbish interfaces and graphics and rubbish controlers. having a fancy widget so I can look like a **** in the comfort of my front room hula'ing, cooking etc is not my idea of fun. Dance dance revolution? I'd rather go a real discotheque thankyouverymuch!

Does anyone remember how much PS2 was when it hit the shops? I'm sure it was 299?

/rant mode off

Now can anyone remember using the electronic lighter mechanism on the rivets on Arcade machines to get free credits ;) ? Used to laugh at the machines with burn marks due to prats out there not realising to disconnect the gas part of lighter 1st :bonk:

Ref Speccy games.....ultimate....... Jet Set Willy ;)

They are. Nintendo always focus on gameplay rather than graphics. Also with Xbox Live you can play classic arcade games from Midway, Namco, Konami. Frogger, Pacman, Ms Pacman, Galax, etc are all going to be on Live soon enough.

nobody gonna mention us getting screwed again by these companies with regards blu-ray / hd-dvd?

don't you remember the betamax/vhs fiasco? We're going through this all again!

What's worse, any of you early adopters of HD may well be in for a very nasty surprise to discover your HD telly isn't actually proper HD.
