Question about RayNox macro system

Hi,

I am looking to have a go at Macro on a budget before I make the leap and buy a dedicated lens.

My current setup is a canon 400d with a canon 50mm f.8 prime lens.

I was thinking about using extension tubes, but have now seen a couple of comments about the raynox system to add macro functionality.

I thought I understood the Raynox to be a additional lens that screws onto your main lens, but a number of sellers seem to specify a specific set of cameras for each lens. For example "RayNox DCR-150 for Canon 450d, 50d and 1000d"

So is this a system which attachs directly to the camera body?


Another - wider question - is, given the camera and lens I currently have, would I get more benefit from the RayNox method or by using Extension tubes?

No, they are filter thread supplementary lenses. The sellers add those models so the products turn up in wider searches, it doesn't actually have anything to do with the product.
They'll fit any filter thread within the range of the clip on adapter.

I think extension tubes would be more effective on your 50mm, the raynox lenses are more effective at longer focal lengths.

Agree with the above, the Raynox is a nice little gadget but will be next to useless on a 50mm. Was great on a 300mm though.
