So I have finally ordered my hope to be future canon 500d with the original cheap lens.

Also today I was off for a camping and this friend of mine brought out his canon 400 with the cheap lens and the cheap version of 75-300mm lens too.

He let me keep it for half an hour where I was allowed to shoot anything.

My 1st question is each time I manual zoom I slightly press the shoot button for auto focus. somehow through the seeing hole it still showed as hazy and not clear but when I take the pic it comes clear on the lcd.

was I doing something wrong or is it something normal? Will I have the same issue with my 500?

2nd question is each time im to take a pic through the seeing hole there are these dots which each time I press slightly on the auto focus some dots turn red. My friend says its because its focused. Yet each time I press again it lights different dots.

Why is that and how do i know where it really is focusing when it turns on different red dots each time I slightly click before actually taking the pic?

Hope I made some sense

Thanks to anyone willing to help me out

Sounds as if the diopter was not adjusted for your own eyesight.

Different dots show focused as it's showing which part is in perfect focus which is a small part of the picture and will change between shots.

You can either manually select a specific focus point or set the camera on auto which will select the one it thinks is best. It lights red to show which one has been selected.

By the way, the "seeing hole" is actually called the viewfinder! actually i just made that up. It's called the horticofistulambulum ;)

So if I understand u well I can actually set the seeing hole to adjust to my eyesight, adjusting it to accomodate any defect I have with my eyesight like if I went to an optician? Is the seing hole called a diopter?

The red dots come random. How can I control them? I rather have the red dots on my actual shooting target then the leaves behind it

The seeing hole is called a viewfinder.
The diopter adjusts the focus in the viewfinder yes, so you can tune it to your eyesight.
Maybe the person you borrowed the camera from has bad eyes and adjusted it for himself and forgot about it when you borrowed the camera.

wow this is more then I expected when jumping from compact to Dslr

fair enough I never bothered going much into detail with any compact. It wasnt worth the bother anyway but at least would have spared me some embaresment of knowing that the seeing hole is the viewfinder

and yeah the guy I borrowed the camera gets practical joked on for having a terrible eyesight
