question on lee filters

i think i remember reading once, that with the size of lee nd grads, it is possible to lower the filter and use it as a normal nd filter
is this right and if so does it work well ??

With a longer focal length, then probably. With a wide angle, no.

But grads are normally only two or three stops of ND, which is not much generally.
