Question Regarding Nikon D700 Live View

I was out shooting yesterday and decided to use the Live View.

I dont know why I did this but whilst in LiveView, I happened to press the Play button (the one you use to playback images) and on the right hand side of the screen popped up a vertical sliding scale.

Does anyone know what this vertical scale is used for.

I think it adjusts the brightness of the scene without adjusting the exposure.

*edit* According to the Thom Hogan guide, it just increses the brightness of the LCD.
