Raynox 150 vs 250 on 18-250mm range?

I'm very keen on getting a Raynox but cannot decide on wether to get the 150 or 250.

I am more tempted by the 150 for the more forgiving DOF but I do want the magnification of the 250. I have a kit lens 18-55 and a 55-250 that I would attach the raynox to, so would I get a good magnification on the 250 with the raynox 150 (i.e. detail of flys eye)? On the other end, would I get a good DOF with the 250 on the 18mm end of the kit lens (i.e. most flower petals in focus)?


I hope someone can help or provide pictures as this is something I've been thinking about for quite a while. Thanks in advance.

Well you can't shoot something relatively large like a flower one minute and then expect to get detail in a fly's eye the next! You're gonna need both.

Depth of field is very shallow with close ups whatever you do - the closer you go, the less you get. It makes no difference which Raynox you use, it's the magnification that affects the DoF.

You'll likely need a ringflash (Marumi is reckoned to be quite good, and cheap) and shoot at a high f/number to get as much DoF as possible.

If you want to shoot both insects and flowers, try a set of extension tubes. You can use just a short one for flowers and then all of them for getting really close. Kenko £120 but make sure they are EF-S compatible.
