Raynox for macro - could somebody explain.

Apologies if this is covered elsewhere but I often see references to Raynox in Macro posts on the forum.

I would really like to try my hand at Macro photography and as I don't have a macro lens just now I wondered if somebody could shed some light on the poduct / concept for me.

I've just sold mines :)

It allows you to use any lens that the universal adaptor fits to get macroesk shots. When I was using it with the 90mm macro the focus distance was about 2cm!!

very shallow dof as well but some cool shots.

And mcuh cheaper than a dedicated macro lens
 
So they're better than the close up things....

Exactly the same principle as those Hoya close-up lenses, but stronger. DCR-250 is +8 diopters, 3 elements, and fully coated optics. DCR-150 is +5.8 diopters (same magnification as +4 and +2 together, but better quality. Don't expect pukka macro lens quality but loads of macro fun for £40-odd quid.
