Purchased a camera on ebay which came with 2 really right stuff brackets - anyone know what type of head I need to attach them to?

Any Arca Swiss compatible head - Arca Swiss, Kirk, Really Right Stuff, Acratech, Markins to name a few.

If you want a gimbal head, Wimberley, Jobu, Lensmaster.

In general the compatible heads are expensive in comparison to say the Manfrotto range of heads....put the brackets up for sale then buy a tripod and head to suit both your photographic needs and budget...:thumbs:

Indeed, you will be looking at around £200 - £250 for any of the heads I mentioned, but you get what you pay for.

You may find some of the Chinese clones are compatible, I am not sure but the Redsnapper range may be Arca Swiss compatible, you can get one of their heads for around £60, you would need to check compatibility though as I have never used one, but they look to be the same.
 
RRS L-brackets are very useful for shifting easily between portrait and landscape orientation with lenses that don't have their own tripod collar.

I have one for my 5D for use with a Markins ball head. Way easier, quicker and more accurate than messing about with trying to drop the ball into the slot on the side and keeps the weight over the centre of the head.

It also makes portrait shooting possible with a lightweight Manfrotto 234RC swivel tilt head on my monopod which is kitted out with an Arca-compatible clamp.

As I have a plate for my 70-200 f/2.8, it also makes switching between lenses a quick operation.

You can get relatively cheap adapters to allow use of Arca plates with just about any tripod head - Giottos do a range of them

Absolutely don't do that - stick with with the Arca-Swiss type quick-release system. It's easily the best and most versatile out there, which is why so many manufacturers use it.

It's not expensive either. Look at Benro, Feisol, Induro, RedSnapper, SunwayFoto, Kirk, RRS, Acratech, Vanguard and many others.
 
Thanks - I managed to pick up a Kirk Ballhead on ebay which look a lot more solid than my Manfrotto! I think I will buy similar plates for my canon 5DII as well

+1 to that, do NOT sell them. RRS is great, if you got them cheap be happy.
