Rear Curtain Sync

Hello all, can anyone help here...

My trying to take pictures on my D700 using the rear curtain sync function and the flash fires twice - once on the shutter opening and once immediately prior to it closing.

On the top screen it says both slow and rear in the info display but when trying to dial in a change it just says rear.

What's going on? I thought the whole point of rear sync was so that it only fires just before the shutter closes?

Ah ok, if that's the case then why does the top plate say "REAR" and "SLOW"?

I have noticed that this only occurs with the pop up flash and not a flashgun.

You're in TTL mode obviously? I only use my speedlight in manual, and in rear curtain it gives no initial flash. Just pops at the end of the exposure. Try manual and see.

SLOW means that it is metering the background and will select a shutter speed that allows the background to be exposed correctly.

REAR means it is firing the flash just before the shutter closes.

The flash will firew twice - first to judge the exposure, the second time whilst the shutter is open with the correct amount of flash.

At least, that's my understanding of the 2 terms - never having owned a Nikon camera....
